The first thing I thought of was my Twitter bio, which says "Vegan, artist, general crankypants," so... number one I guess! Though it really depends on the venue.

I don't use twitter so I question whether I even really exist.

I don't think you do. I also now think that you and Footface are the same person.

It's important to me, so says my twitter description!
"29-year-old vegan, feminist graphic designer who loves dancing in my kitchen and wooing cats."

On the internet it's probably like first, internally it's probably 4th or 5th after a couple of other things, in real life it doesn't come up too often.

It's kind of an afterthought for me. Not that it isn't important but I don't see it much as one of my defining characteristics or features. I'm all: art, art, art, art, literature, art, art, writing, art, art, poetry, cooking, cinema, art, art, music, dance, art, art, lover of old Hollywood trivia, random trivial minutiae and occasional queerly morbid curiosities, art, art, artartartartart...

I am kind of the same way. I have zero veggie friends IRL. But online, I am active on messageboards, blogs, reddit etc and a lot of the sites I visit have to do with veganisim.

Funny this topic came up, since I have been thinking about it lately. Vegan is not high up on my self identification when I am with my friends, but it is pretty high up online, internally, and at home. I bet this would be different if I had veggie friends.

When we were teenagers, labeling was a huge deal. Everyone got put into a category, and there you stayed. I always hated that, and tried very hard to have friends in different groups, and did different things.

Now I try to think of how to identify myself, and its tough. It really is about context, who you are talking to, what you are doing etc. Unfortunately, based on the way I look, and place I live, I am still getting stuck with shitty labels I hate. Just because I am blonde and live in Orange County does not make me a real housewife ok? (yes, I get that when I travel, literally)

yeah, i don't really think about it. i have friends who knew me for months, or years in some cases, before they realized i was vegan, because it doesn't occur to me to mention it unless someone is trying to feed me. it might be because i think of my interest in things like animal welfare or cooking as separate from veganism, because they predate the transition by so many years. to me, "vegan" is something that describes how i eat/shop, not how i think or live or whatever. my twitter bio would be something like "hopes it gets weird / recycle it jerk / is afraid the pigeons aren't warm enough / puppets puppets puppets / that's not how you use that word / more salt / drunk." and the tweets would just be the funniest combos i came up with while playing Cards Against Humanity by myself.

I don't know if this is about labeling, so much as identifying. I think they're different. Like, what about yourself is most important to you, or has the most to do with who you are. My actual list might go Father, atheist, vegan, wordperson... But that doesn't mean that I, like, introduce myself to people as a father.

You guys are a little bit fast to identify as not-mumbles. Maybe you should try identifying as mumbles-adjacent instead?

I identify as on the same planet as mumbles, breathing air similar to mumbles', watchin' the same moon, looking at the same stars...

I identify as slightly to the left of mumbles, peering over his shoulder. Breathing heavily.

It feels weird to itemize my identity in that way, but I think I would call myself a person who loves food/cooking before I would mention veganism. Cooking and eating are a big part of my life, and that's not because I'm vegan, it just so happens that all I only cook and eat vegan food because that's the type of food that I enjoy and that aligns with my values. And I'm not shy about telling people that I'm vegan, but I do prefer them to get to know me a little first so they don't make any assumptions about me based on their opinion of vegans. That said, people are never too surprised when they find out... maybe it's because I am constantly eating hummus. Constantly.

i'm so curious what all you guys who say vegan is 5 or 6 count as other descriptors. i can't really think of anything else about myself other than eating and being a general nerd. I mean, at work, my only descriptor is "dietitian" or "waitress with a master's degree"
i have really low self esteem though, so maybe that has something to do with it.
