I love it, but I don't understand how he keeps track of the pattern when he's down on the ground walking it out.

It seems like he would need an aerial view, or some sort of guide. I watched a show on crop circles once in which a group of hardcore crop circle makers had a very intricate plan on how many steps to take in each direction.
