So, I'm looking for some ideas on things to do in the evenings that don't involve sitting on my couch, watching movies, video games, using the computer, or spending tons of money. The lack of winter sunshine after 5pm combined with my current lack of funds has really gotten me in a rut. I spend far too much time on my couch. This can be fun and relaxing, but it's gotten to be too much. I need new stuff to do! Help!

Crafts! Do you sew, paint, draw, anything like that? You cooould go for walks, hula hoop, go to the library, clean your house, try a new recipe.

Practice yoga. You can teach yourself for free from library books and dvd's and on line, don't really need any special equipment, and it will get you moving and off the couch and have health benefits. Ya, taking a class is better, but those can get pricy. Or, similarly, If you can borrow a guitar that someone you know has given up on playing, you could teach yourself that from the same sort of sources. Or learn to knit, crochet, paint, draw?

I do practice yoga, but prefer to do it during the day. I have considered switching to the night or just doubling up, but am having trouble with this. Great idea, though, and yoga motivates me to do other things too. I do clean my house at night sometimes, but it's pretty boring. I don't really like to walk at night at this time of year (dark) and the library closes at 5:30. My boyfriend has a guitar (live together). I think about trying to learn often. I have motivation issues (duh). I would love to learn a craft of some sort. I really like mosaics and decoupage (I think it's called?), good call. And how did you know, I need a hula hoop!

The short days really suck for me. I just moved to LA from the east coast, which is obviously not very cold (but is right now!), but the days did not magically get longer like I hoped : ). It just feels like nighttime so, so early and I sit on the couch, open up my computer or turn on the TV and don't get up for hours. It's like I'm glued there. I need to break this pattern, probably should start with not sitting down in the first place.

Well, since you live with your boyfriend, is he home in the evenings? Maybe you could start playing board games or cards (not filters, although having sex is always a good idea too!).

I have to ask whether you typed that out or if it was filtered.

I am all for crafts. Plus that way you can have a movie or a podcast going in the background and you don't feel unproductive.

you could learn how to play a musical instrument, go for walks with friends, volunteer somewhere, clean/organise your place, cook stuff, fork your bf, paint, do crafts, etc.

My dad has a banjo that I kind of want to steal from his house and learn to play.

It is so very hard to not get glued to the sofa once you get home! I think the only way to avoid it so to just not let it start. Either don't turn on the tv/computer or set a time limit and mean it. I need to work on this myself though... I just bought a musical instrument so I'm hoping that'll help keep me engaged.

I have exactly the same problem going on myself! Great ideas! I think setting goals can be quite a good one to stay motivated

Even if I actually wanted to say "quietly playing chesss" I would just write "having sex" because it's quicker!

Go to the gym/ for a walk directly after work- so the couch can't get you.

i've been having a huge problem with this as well. i bought a gym membership, and need to use it more often. my problem is that i mostly work in the evenings, so when i get up i'll just sit on the couch until it's time to get ready. i feel like i waste so many days...

Hey everybody, thanks for the suggestions. I went to the library and got some books. Some are just to read, some are about different crafts/hobby-type stuff. Haven't started any yet, but haven't been sitting on the couch quite as much. I'm not working right now, so I don't have that "get home from work couch lock." And I have tons of free time during the day to do stuff, which I usually do, but I feel so unproductive (and my couch is a futon at the moment and it makes my butt fall asleep to sit on it too long). I've taken up geocaching since my not working time started and go on super long walks and hikes and then I'm really tired, so yeah, sitting commences. I think that setting a time limit or organizing my time better would definitely help me. I need to create something or accomplish something. My current projects are about making myself healthier, with more exercise, eating healthier, and cooking awesome meals, which don't give me a "product," like socks or decorations or articles. And that's what I want. And to get out and meet people because I'm new to this city.

Well, that certainly was a rambling post. Excuse me, it's late and I'm cracked out from cyber-Monday window shopping. : )

but a long walk or hike are exercise and it is totally fine to just sit and watch/listen/relax after!

When did you move back to the east coast?! Did you move back to CT or somewhere else?

I didn't mean to say I moved back to the east coast? Did I say that somewhere by accident? I just still feel new here because I moved to a new area in October.
