I booked some flights on Emirates using Expedia. As I already had the Expedia account, it filled my details in automatically. I very stupidly didn't check them properly and it used my name Liz. I justhad to phone Expedia to input our passport details. They say that Emirates won't allow me to change my name on the booking (it says Elizabeth on my passport). They say the only thing to do is cancel the booking and rebook. They want to charge me £200 for the cancellation, and even if I could rebook on the same flights they will be more expensive. They need to be the same flights because I am doing a tour at the other end which is all arranged and paid for.

I have sent Emirates a very grovelling e-mail and am driving myself mad checking my e-mail every 2 minutes for a reply.

Oh why am I such an idiot?

I suppose you paid by credit card? I wonder if you could get out of it by having the charges on the card reversedd or contested?

But I still need the flights.

Emirates say they can't change it. Expedia say they can't. I'm crying my eyes out, I don't know what to do.

I am so sorry! I have no solution though, I guess you'll have to pay the cancellation fee and rebook that same flight? Better than no trip at all, right?

Yeah I suppose but I'm really stressed that I cancel then can't get the same flight.

There aren't any flights coming back on the same day, at least not Emirates.

oh no, that sounds frustrating! Is there really a problem with the ticket being booked under Liz, instead of Elizabeth? It's quite obviously a shortened version of your name.

That's what I keep saying but they are saying it is a problem.

That is unfortunate. Do you have enough time to change your legal name to Liz?

Ha. I assume that is a joke but probably not.

I'm so sorry, Efcliz! I'm sure they're being all strict for security/terrorism reasons. I'm searching now trying to figure out an option for you.

Have you seen this post? http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/mywanderlus ... sports_813

I would try and call the security folks at your departure airport and see what they say. Sounds like, from that post, that some people have made it through. I would also check at the return flight airport. Liz is clearly a diminutive of Elizabeth.

Thanks. I will try that but it seems as though Expedia won't even accept my passport details until this is sorted out.

This could work, you can always change it back but once you've changed your name & passport it may not be cheaper! I know someone who changed her name so she could use her friends round the world plane ticket after her friend was unable to go!

Also found this one, which seems even more complicated than your issue (maiden name versus married name). Obviously some of these posts are old, but they are post 9/11.

I would say call the security desk, ask the airline if you can bring birth certificates and other ID that shows your name as Liz or Elizabeth. Overwhelm them with proof that Liz = Elizabeth. I'd exhaust all options before shelling out that crazy fee.

This is ridiculous. I hope it gets worked out without you having to buy a new ticket. If it happened to me here I would probably call Citizens Advice Bureau and see if they could help or if something signed by a Justice of the peace saying it was my passport but I went by that name or something would work. But I dunno if it would, or what stuff like that is available over there.

Yeah, it's not just the fee anymore, it's that there's no availability on the return journey,

Oh Efcliz, that sucks!
My BF's mom had the same problem once just because the online form for booking the flight didn't have an option for academic titles, and her passprt says Doctor.
Silly, huh?
