This has been happening infrequently since I moved into my house 3 1/2 years ago. Someone will knock my door, give me some long-winded story about how they need bus fare because their family member next door isn't home, or their sister has been in a car accident thirty miles away, or they got robbed and have no money. I always tell them no, and they leave. I've had this happen to me at least six or seven times.

I just had a woman knock on my door who asked me for money less than a month ago! I didn't give it to her the first time, I told her I recognized her, and she claimed she remembered me and that's why she came to ask me for help again. So she should have remembered that I didn't give her shiitake the first time, either. First time she claimed she'd be robbed near my house, tonight she claimed she went to visit some friends nearby and they weren't home and one of their mothers got in a bad car wreck, I don't even forking know. She has the quivery voice and teary-eyed thing down pat.

What the hell? This never happened when I lived only five blocks away (which, yes, is probably the distinction between Berkeley and Oakland, but still, it's five physical blocks). Is this a thing? People just straight-up begging at your door? I know I'm running the risk of sounding like a calloused, skeptical, tea party crasshole, but I'm practically broke myself. And I'm pretty sure their stories are all bullshiitake and they just want drug money. Which makes me mad because the only drug habit I can afford to finance is my own. Amiright?

They have pretty much tried to outlaw homelessness in my city. I think that it's illegal to panhandle door-to-door here. I've seen the random guy with the empty gas can in the same store parking lot more than once. What scares me is that it must work because he's there over and over again.

In my old neighborhood, there is a guy who lives in the group home around the corner from my old place who would do this to a friend and me. Neither of us mind helping out when we can, but we both tend to be broke ourselves, and this guy at least has a place to stay and meals. My friend still lives there...he finally told the guy to stop coming to his place after it became an almost-daily thing, so it hasn't happened for some time.

This never happens in my current neighborhood.

Used to happen when I lived at home, but that's because people knew my mom was a bleeding heart. There was always someone knocking on the door to ask her for cash or cigarettes (she didn't even smoke, but she kept a pack around for them.) I don't think it's happened to me since, though.

Funny, because this used to happen a lot when I lived in Berkeley, but not since I moved to Oakland.

It wouldn't happen in my neighborhood. But they have knocked on the window of my car at a stop light. And then acted all mad 'cause I won't roll down the window.
But I am an entitled bisque, so...

(Not really, I just scare easily)

Never had happen here, but I will in redneck country so people are probably too scared they'd we shot. I usually get people who are lost and end up finding our house some how which is hard to find when you're looking for it.

I've never even heard of this happening. I used to get guys coming around asking for sex, since my old place used to be a brothel, but that's as close as it gets. At least they offered me money.

it happened one time that i can remember at our old house. It was late at night so it was scary. I don't really have a problem with people asking for money or cigarettes out in public but it would freak me out to have people always coming into my personal space like that.

Every time I read the title of this thread I think it says "do straight people panhandle at your door."

(No one of any sexual orientation panhandles at my door, for the record.)

When I've been sitting outside on the steps, but no one has ever actually knocked.

The other day, two hippie kids were asking for four bucks so they could take the bus to Evergreen, about five miles away. Lazy forkers, by the time they managed to collect four bucks worth of change, they could have walked.

Funny, that's what I thought too. I kept thinking "no, but they do everywhere else..."

I voted "Never", but then remembered that it happened a couple times at work (I worked from my boss's home office, in a very well-off neighborhood). A couple of times, people came by selling knick knacs or offering small services like raking the yard, and when I said I didn't need any of these (and wasn't in a position to make these decisions anyway, this not being my home), asked for spare change instead. Their stories always seemed straightforward, though. Or if they were made up, they were made up on the likely theme of "I have nowhere to sleep, I have no money to eat" rather than needing a bus.

No one ever did that in my mom's neighborhood, knowing everyone there is broke, and in Korea I don't think I've ever been asked for cash, anywhere.

Strangely, no. I live in a neighborhood were people are passed out or homeless or both often on my street. However, no one has ever knocked on my door for money if they weren't trying to sell me something.

Nope. All we get over here is people selling tamales to perfect strangers and people wanting cash for gold.

I used to go to this bar where it was a mother and son team who came every week and gave the same story about needing money for a cab. They were known addicts and when people would tell them that they had seen the two before, the mom and son would get super pissed.

It happened once when I was a Cal college student living in North Oakland, so I learned not to answer the door unless I was expecting someone...
I did always get approached by the same kid on BART, though. He always asked for money for his basketball team, and his breath stank something horrible.

I've lived in Illinois, Colorado, Georgia, Alabama, New Mexico, Washington, and New Mexico again. This has never happened to me anywhere. I have, however, had the door-to-door meat salesman come by. But he was very nice and we talked about veganism for 20 minutes. I think someone just asking for money at my door would make me very uncomfortable.

I live in a renovated church, so yes they do sometimes. There is no indication on the building that this is a private residence or that is it not an active church.

They buzz the phone and I get excited that I might have a package but no, they want directions (I am the muse for TomTom) or they want money or to pray.

They don't. I live on a dirt road and you cant tell from the main street there's even homes back there.

But mostly I came to say that I read the question as "do straight people panhandle..." I didn't understand why that distinction made any difference.
