Oh this is so sad!

I've had the PPK forum tab open on my browser for about 9-10 years! My desktop will never be the same. And I too have made lifelong friends from responding to a potluck thread.

I will chime in late with just a small thanks.

Thank you Isa for having me as one of the recipe testers for Isa Does It. That happened in the time when I was at home for months suffering from depression, and testing the recipes was my way of keeping myself occupied and forcing myself to cook and eat food.

Thank you PPK for being full of sweet, caring people. (Josh, Em, the people on Skype) Thanks for making my time as a baby vegan a good time.

Also, in the restaurant where I work now as a cook, we have a dish with shiitake in it, and I STILL smile whenever I see the box with shiitakes in the fridge.

Bless your hearts, you croissants.

Sadness. I first joined in 2006. I haven't been active in ages but still popped in from time to time. I'll always remember the San Diego PPK potluck. I made lots of friends here, and even though I'm only still in touch with a few of them, I remember you all fondly.

While I don't post much I am super sad to see the forums go. I have done many a search for answers here. I'm looking forward to the new site and new recipes!

I'm sad to see an end to PPK too! I wasn't a member here long, though I know a lot of members from other vegan forums I belonged to that died out. I love the laid back atmosphere here, and how the entire focus of these forums isn't on health/obsession with macronutrients for once. Very refreshing. I also really appreciate all the support and love I have received here. May we all find each other somewhere out there in the vast cyber world!

I was mostly a lurker. Finally made an account and still... mostly lurked. (I have social anxiety ok!) But I have been on here almost every day since I joined. I feel like I know you guys so well. It's particularly sad to see the forum going just before the holidays, but I'm really happy to see a lot of us are moving over to reddit. I made an account and I'm going to work to be more active there, because you lot are really great. Thanks for everything, and the support you gave even without knowing it. <3

A question about the Reddit PPK. I'm not currently a member of Reddit, and I'd rather ask it here than at Reddit. Is the PPK subReddit public or private? In other words, is it open to all Reddit users, or only those from these forums?

Public, open to all reddit users. However, it has been delisted from /r/all and trending to prevent some of the unwanted attention that comes with being that visible.

Aww, vet school has kept me super busy and I haven't been on in forever, this makes me sad to find out!

I was never a super active member, but the ppk definitely will always be special to me.

Thanks for the everything, Isa!

Oh man, what a sad thing to read this morning! But I get it, and congrats to Isa.

I've been more of a lurker than a poster here, but I can't begin to explain how much I've learned from everyone here, not to mention how much food porn I've drooled over. Ya'll are the best. I hope everything can be archived somehow.

Guess I'll seek out the Reddit while I dry my tears. PPK 4 LYFE.

I'm debating whether to join Reddit or not. I have heard it's not the safest space.

It's fine. Especially if you stick to places like /r/theppk and don't go on the subs with millions of subscribers. Even they are safe too though. It's a site with millions of users on it and there are bound to be bad apples, but 99.999% of people are just fine. If you go into one of the large subreddits and start telling people to be vegan then you might get a few mean replies but that's it. Just like with anywhere on the internet, no personal info.

And as for the PPK subreddit itself, it's almost entirely invisible to the rest of reddit. So there's not any danger there.

Reddit is fine, as others have said. For the most part, you will find what you go looking for and probably aren't any more likely to encounter crassholes or creeps than anywhere else, assuming you stay out of subs likely to attract trolls.

If I click members the PPK only shows 250 members. Is that correct? I feel like this forum is much bigger than that, but I was wondering how many moved to Reddit and it only says 219 which I thought small. Maybe most people moved, though it feels less busy there.

That's definitely not accurate--the member listing just stops at 250 for whatever reason. Actual number is just shy of 6,000. With some untold number of spammers representing a significant chunk of that.

As far as active users go, 250 is probably optimistic.

You mean on the top bit of this forum? Yeah that's not right, it only shows the first ten pages of members for some reason. If you go to page 10 you'll notice even all those members joined in 2010. I don't know why it says that but there are many more members than that here.

Maybe the boards are falling apart slowly, beginning with the member list.

That would be fun. Instead of just disappearing one day, the boards suffer a slow identity death. Random filters crop up. When you click on a link, you just get a message to the effect of "I can't remember what anyone said about this right now. I can't remember a lot of things, lately." Things get slower and creakier. The boards move into hospice care. It mistakes newer members for bebopmouse.

There are lots of tearful days, as we confront a boards that looks the same, but is difficult to recognize, and that doesn't recognize us. Eventually, when it dies, we are sad, but also relieved that the suffering and confusion is finally over.

I'll start working on this, too.

Yeah, I'd rather the boards go out in a glorious final flounce than sadly wither away to something unrecognizable. It's already getting to be a bit of a ghost town around here.

Honestly, I think it's been slowly dying for a long time before Isa made it official. People had moved on to other formats. No one was posting in food porn any more. They were all just instigraming their pics. Bit by bit there was less action in general here. It's time to let it go, but it still hurts!

It has definitely quieted down a lot more since the announcement. It was quieter a bit before, but now everyone has gone. I think we're all kinda expecting to log on one day and it'll be gone.
