OR PPKERS THAT REGULARLY BUY ART.

Hi guys, I suck at pricing my work. A lot.
Someone just offered to buy my work during my critique (eeee!!), and I have no idea what to charge.
Can anyone help?

The work is:
A set of 25 4x4" prints (white-on-white embossed rats + 1 gray embossed rat)

What would you sell them for, what price would you find reasonable if you were buying it.

Panders, I'm looking at you.

I think the best thing is asking one of your tutors, at least if you have one you like. When I've done that the general thing has been like, double to triple the amount I was thinking, which I went with and it's worked out (and depending on who is interested in buying, you can be like 'I was unsure on pricing so asked blah blah, who suggested around whatever').

That said, when it's selling to a friend or someone I know can't afford that much, or a gallery fundraising thing or whatever, or if I just want to let the work out into the world, then I kind of just think about the least I'd be happy to part with it for? That might actually be kind of bad advice career wise, but whatever. Also, I dunno if I'd say I 'regularly' sell art at all.

Pricing does suck though.

eta: the divide I'm talking about above is probably just sales though dealers or to institutions versus personal sales or sales through non-profit galleries

I sent you a FB message with more detail.
I would price work to a friend for less if I knew they didn't have a lot of money. I also once paid a friend twice what they asked for a painting because you ought to get what a work is worth. You are not goddamn wal mart.
If you're doing a set of small prints I would think of the price of each one and then multiply from there. Also, would you prefer to get money or would you prefer to keep the work if the person won't pay your price? You can always come down in price but you won't be able to go up. If you'd be happy with $20 per print, then multiply by 25. You can do a bit less than the total if they want to buy a whole set.
Depending on who you're dealing with I wouldn't say I was unsure about pricing. Collectors will whine and want a discount. If they can afford it they can pay for it.

They don't teach you how to price your art in art school! I had the most ridiculous class that was supposed to teach us about how to sell our art while I was in art school. They never gave us numbers. They just said, "Your art prices should always go up." Haha. One of my friend sold postcards of her art - they were around $10 dollars a card. Not limited edition or anything special - but were in color.

Maybe check online and see what other people are selling their art for? Etsy might be a good site. Good luck and congratz!

yeah what the fork is this.

for one print i'd say about $20 multiplied by 25, as panda suggested. but then look at all the pictures together as a set and ask yourself, "is this worth $500 or do i want more?" how much time did you put into them? how much did you spend on materials? factor this into it, as well.

I can never think in those loose terms of what art is intrinsically worth, so I like to calculate material costs (sometimes x 2, that's a standard wholesale->retail conversion) + (hours x an hourly wage). As for guessing what hourly wage you are worth, well, do you feel happy with your pay at whatever job you have? Do you feel you deserve more, what would be ideal? Calculating cost this way can sometimes work great, sometimes seem way too low, and sometimes seem way too high... like people have already said, there is no magic trick. The checking etsy idea for similar size and material projects is a good idea too.

I appreciate the answers, but I have long since priced and sold etc.
I also charged $60 extra to matt and frame it (which I already do, and it costs me about $30)
