I just discovered a few partially used bottles of aveda shampoo and conditioner under my sink that still look good but have probably been under there for at least a year, probably two. I know there's pretty strict rules on when to throw make-up out but what about shampoo and conditioner? One of the conditioners is one of those really great super expensive ones and I'd hate to throw it out, then again I'd hate for all my hair to fall out or turn green or whatever might happen if I use something past the date it's good.

So what's the verdict, do I use it or toss it?

I'd use it unless the consistency and/or smell were markedly different from how they started out. I don't see shampoo harboring bacteria the same way mascara would.

If there is no expiry date I consider it safe. I still use make-up that is over a year old, despite my sister telling me not to.

I do the same thing! I just finished using a blush that was at least 2 years old. I just can't bare to throw things away! I tr to avoid watching all those shows that show you all the creepy crawly things that are on the make up. When it come to eye make up I am really careful though.

No way you probaly can't get that color again!

I don't belive in the throw away make up rule at all! Yeah if it is dried up or I have a skin infection. I never had mold or fungus growing on old powder or eyeshadow so I just don't belive it!

the concern isn't mold or fungus, it's bacteria that's picked up from the air or your skin and grows on the cosmetic, or ingredients in the makeup that go rancid. but you're right, i couldn't get that color again--at least not for 50 cents.

HAHAHAHHA! It's wet and wild isn't it? Crazy it is almost $3 now!
I use crazy old stuff all the time and I never had any rancid makup. The bacteria thing maybe in brushes but I still don't belive it. It is just a conspiracy on the part of makeup companys to get us to buy the new crepe they shovel! FYI every 6 months all the cosmetic companys do a major roll out of new products.

That's crazy.
When I looked it up yesterday, I saw they're mostly concerned with mascara--which I don't use--and things with oils going rancid.

I've totally been doing an overhaul on my makeup anyway. I had a ton when I was in highschool but went through a period where I just didn't wear any. Now, my styles changed a lot and I want browns, nudes, and vegan everything. I don't have anything old, and everything's powder except for my concealer, which is new.

How often do yall clean your brushes? I only use them for powders.

I'm with you on this. I don't usually wear much make up (if any), although I do have my days where I feel like painting my face up right and proper. But if I tossed all my make up out every six months or so like we are "supposed" to do, I'd be throwing away practically unused, new make up. I'm 33 and no face infections from make up yet, so I don't bother chucking it unless it's obviously old (dried up or whatever) or if I just don't like it anymore or never wear it.

On the shampoo question--hell yeah, use it!

Mascara is the only thing I'll throw out semi-regularly. Everything else is fine unless it smells or looks funny.

Has anyone ever had makeup that turned a funny smell? I can't imagine what it'd smell like..

Actually I haven't, which is why I'm wondering if that isn't just a scare tactic. My nail polish has separated or dried up, but nothing, not even shampoo has ever gotten a weird smell.

Ok looks like we have a consensus, I'm keeping these shampoos/conditioners and using them to my heart (or scalps) content.

Yeah, I've had nail polish turn crappy. The only thing my makeup has ever done is dry up. I can imagine not wanting to put old lipstick on though. I've had a cheapy black stick before for Halloween and it basically turned to crayon. My boyfriend uses it to write messages on the bathroom mirror. It's probably teeming with cooties.

I am going to throw out my lone old pink glittery eyeliner I've been saving after reading this though. I used it this past Halloween when I was Ramona Flowers and I didn't get any reaction, but it kind of skeeves me out now.

Yeah I draw the line at eye liner and mascara. One of my good friends got an eye infection from an old eyeliner.
