I've been asked to help finding readings for our college Christmas carol concert. They're not religious, just humorous, touching or thought provoking fairly short pieces read by staff and students. The theme this year is New Birth/New Beginnings. I wanted to find something funny about becoming a parent, as well as anything else on the theme, but I'm coming up short. They could be poems, sections from books, even song lyrics. Any ideas, oh wise ones?

I will try and think on your theme. Consult my more modern poetry books that might have something that fits the bill. Nothing's coming to mind off the bat.

I don't think these are what you want in terms of humorous and they might be too poetry-try but I looked at some poems in my books and found some I like that are about parenthood. Or at least motherhood:

Sorry, pressed submit before finishing. Also:

Quote:
Ninth Month

Already you are moving down.

Already your floating head engaged in the inlet from where you will head out.

Already the world, the world.

And you are slipping down, away from my heart.

That's by Victoria Redel from this website: http://www.ivillage.com/forums/node/509999

Kinda maybe too serious though, methinks. But just some starters.

Maybe something from Anne Lamott's book that she co-wrote with her son (called Operating Instructions)?
