so, the new boards came with the awesome feature that posts can actually be edited by their authors*. how awesome is that, right?

the thing is, it's kind of an abuse of that awesomeness to use the edit function to delete posts you regret making, for whatever reason. it's not fair to people who have responded and it's not conducive to furthering discussion. so, from now on, there will be a 5-minute window in which you can edit your posts. after 5 minutes, they stay as they are.

please, if you're going to post something you think you might want to remove at a later point in time, don't. sit on it for a bit and decide if it's something you think should be out there in the internet ether when we're all gone and cockroaches rule the world. and as was the case on the old boards, if you feel strongly that a thread you started should be taking out of circulation, please contact an administrator with a request and explanation.

*okay, so the old boards had that feature, too. still: it's awesome!

The old boards had that feature for years without a time limit. Or am I insane?

Non-mods couldn't delete their posts on the old boards. Has that changed?

Any time I would catch a typo in my post I would go back and edit. Sometimes it would be a day or two later.

I thought the restriction was just that you can't delete posts- only quasi delete them by replacing all their content with a single character.

But what if I type something at 5 a.m. and then read it when I get to work at 8:30 and see embarrassing typos!? I need to be able to edit my comas!

Yeah, you could always edit, just not delete your whole post.

we'll either learn some humility and suck up our bullshiitake comma splices and hanging participles (are these real things?) or spend 5 minutes furiously proofing everything after submitting!

I NEED to be able to edit my typos or my OCD will freak me out and I might end up going insane.

If I see typos in my posts and it's too late to edit, should I report them so mods can correct them for me?

Yeah, I'm pretty baffled by this! Editing posts has never been an issue as far as I know and I'm constantly fixing typos later....

I agree. Sometimes my neuro disease has me putting the wrong words or my words in the wrong order, I don't like that I'm not allowed to fix it if I don't do it within a few minutes (quite often it takes me longer to see the mistakes even with re-reading before submitting etc). I don't think it's fair that we all get treated like naughty children because some people abuse it. It's a bit overkill IMO.

The issue isn't editing; it's when people use the edit feature to delete their posts, thus rendering the threads they posted in/started confusing and annoying. If anyone can think of a way to prevent this from happening short of removing the edit feature, let's hear it!

maybe as a fail safe, we should all take turns quoting every single post that is made at least once in every thread, that way the person who made the original post will never be able to edit the quote!
