We have a little town at the southernmost tip of Illinois called Cairo (that's KAY-ro, not KI-ro) that I had the pleasure of driving through once. It used to be a bustling port town because it sits at the intersection of the Ohio River and the Mississippi but now it's just an abandoned mess. There didn't appear to be any functional businesses there and the only people I saw were sitting on lawnchairs outside of derelict buildings. Apparently it suffered from a lot of racial conflict in the early 70's and never quite recovered. The Wikipedia article nicely sums it up and the pictures of the town couldn't be a more accurate reflection of reality.
I am not planning on moving to any of these cities although I am intrigued that the PPK has assumed that both of my Stupid Polls™ are asking for career help. They're really silly polls based on song lyrics. I will phrase my next poll more appropriately. Or more accurately, I will stop making polls that have no meaning.
For the record, I have heard of all 3 cities and liked Houston. I also had some questionable border crossing going on near Detroit at 2 am once and the woman thought we were dumb but that was ok because we were.

If two of the top things about a city are that the rent is cheap and that it's 150 miles from something good, I think you are probably talking about a shithole.
A shithole with some vegans living nearby, but a shithole nonetheless.
The only good thing about Buffalo is that when it eventually collapses into a pit of post-industrial despair, it's just a short hovercraft ride across the lake to Canada, and freedom.
(You do have an emergency escape hovercraft...don't you?)

Am I the last Houston resident on the PPK? I've been wondering that. Sad. It is very vegan-friendly, there's lots of art, and the economy is relatively stable. I used to want to move to Austin but I've come to prefer the size and diversity of Houston. Of course, I'm from what amounts to a suburb-type place in the middle of nowhere in Louisiana, so I can find something to love in pretty much any large city.
Detroit is where Robocop* takes place, so it's got that going for it.
* I just saw that Brian referenced this already. I guess it bears repeating?

I am from the Detroit area, and I've got some loyalty to it, but there's not much reason to move there.
Pittsburgh is actually pretty cool. It's crazy cheap to live there, there's a good community of vegans and left wing types, and they have Zenith, the greatest vegan brunch place of all time. It is in an adorable vintage/antique store, and for $10, you get a tasty vegan entree, tea or coffee, access to an all-you-can-eat vegan appetizer buffet, AND...wait for it....an-all-you-can-eat vegan cake AND pie buffet!!!!!!

I went to this lecture about Detroit/Glasgow last month (because I'm kind of a geek for urban planning/re-generation topics) and it was super-interesting/scary. I feel bad for Detroit :(

I always hear good things about Pittsburgh and their revitalization plan. I hear this because Hamilton, On is also a failing steel mill city and a lot of people look to Pittsburgh as the solution.
Of course, none of this matters, as there is apparently all you can eat vegan cake and pie in Pittsburgh. If that isn't a game changer then you aren't paying attention.

What about Bethlehem, PA as the solution? REPRAZENT. They're doing some awesome stuff with the old factory.

No matter what there's a ton of construction in all of those cities, they are all horrible for traffic, and all of their industrial/shipping districts are hard to navigate in a semi-truck.

I'd move there for Zenith alone.
That's awesome! I will definitely have to check it out the next time I'm home visiting my family. Pittsburgh does have a lot of cool places and history, and I really love the hometown feel. I find they're MUCH friendlier than people in my current city. If only I could afford to live there on my champagne tastes :D.

I'm not a fan of Pittsburgh. It's a pretty ugly city. And half the buildings are named after Heinz ketchup.

Have not been to Houston.
Detroit, has a bad rep. I sort of dug it. They have some awesome artists communities springing up and things are so cheap people are actually able to open business's. Seems really cool, course it also has some knarly spots, but its not as bad as people make it seem. Michiganders are pretty great people in my experience, and sort of pride themselves for staying in Michigan and getting through the tough times. I dig the positivity of it and the sense of community that I find lacking in many areas
Pittsburgh, only played a show here. The town looked cool....thats all I now
