I work at a vegetarian restaurant, and a girl came in for her 16th birthday with her family. She told me she was vegan, and I got all excited (maybe too excited?) and told her I was vegan as well. It's hard to find other vegans around here. She got some great vegan food, and was so happy the whole time. I thought it was absolutely adorable! I live in south Texas, and it's pretty hellish to be vegetarian here. It's even worse for vegans! It really brightened my day to see a young girl embracing veganism so young, and in an area where people are actually quite rude to people for being vegetarian or vegan. Does anyone else get that "D'aww!" moment when they meet young vegans?

A girl from my hometown who's in 5th grade I think, has been vegan for a year and is the only vegan in her family! Mega awwwws.

I haven't met any young vegans yet, but I am one!

I'm jealous of two kinds of vegans: itty bitty kid/teen ones and PPKers who have been such for a long time. I wish I had known about this forum sooner! (or had the nerve to stop lurking before the new forums came out).

It makes me really thrilled for them to start so young. A lot of my friends kids want to go vegan or have gone vegan at really young ages, like 5. I get really excited about it, even buying them little vegan care packages full of vegan goodies.

I am a teenage vegan! I went vegan when I was 13 and I'm 17 now! I know a few other teenagers that are trying to be vegan, but are mostly vegetarian.

My 13 year old has a friend that has been vegan for life. Her parents like it when she comes over, because they know a;; our food is "safe".

I'm 16 and I think I'm beginning to influence my close friends somewhat - one decided to go vegetarian, at least until the end of the month, so that's a start! :)

I went vegan at 15! I guess it is the kind of age you start questioning a lot of things about life, so it makes sense to me. My brother decided to be vegetarian before he even knew such a thing existed, at about age 4!

Good on them. I couldn't to save my life at that age, I would have struggled. I guess it just means information is easier to come across now. Not like in my day, when I had to walk ten kilometres in the desert heat (we don't get snow, that one's never going to work for me) to access a dusty set of 1984 encyclopedias at the local library.

I wish I'd known veganism existed when I was a kid/teen. I still have yet to meet a real-life vegan!

Yes, young vegans make me smile. I wish my parents had supported me when I wanted to go veg as a teen.

I have never met a young vegan, but it's super awesome knowing people make that decision when they are young. Mr. papaya went vegan when he was 14 and I've always thought that was super awesome.

I'm a teenage vegan! But only for a little bit longer.

I wish I had had the wisdom to go vegan much earlier, which is why I love seeing young vegans.

I was 17! Almost 8 years ago! I would have done it sooner if I'd known it was the right thing to do.

When I started at UC Berkeley and moved into a room in a family's house, I was the first vegan they knew. That took some adjustments. It took some more when their daughter (14 at the time) decided to become vegan, too. We cooked a lot of food together and I sort of, hm, mentored? her (not that she needed it, she was awesome! And smart! --- but it made her folks feel better that a thriving vegan role model was around). Now she's a he at Oberlin and turning other other kids vegan, and that same awesomeness continues.

In short, vegan teens: they're great!
