After spending a few years trying to make it happen, I finally moved close to Portland. The thing is... I don't know how I'm going to meet new people and make friends, because I don't know anyone here! It might be easy to meet people through college, but I'm not in school right now.
How did all of you meet people after making a big move? Also, please share any moving experiences, lessons or stories, because you're all very interesting. (...that isn't sarcasm, either.)

I just moved to a new city, and what I do is just go out to shows by myself and hang out. I've already met a bunch of people, but it's easier if you have something like that that you like to do that brings you into contact with people you have stuff in common with.
It depends where you live, as well. I find it waaay easier to meet people here than I did in NYC.

I moved to two cities sight unseen and made friends by going to shows or wherever alone and talking to other loners or groups and also using the internet. I think meeting people from the internet carries a less negative stigma than say, oh 5-7 years ago.

(Except I don't have any irl ppk friends. YET.) It's easier that way, because then you already know each other and you know that you enjoy each other! I'd also recommend maybe finding somewhere you could volunteer at that pertains to your interests (food co-op, humane society, what have you). You're bound to meet nice people there, plus you'll have a place where you see each other regularly. ETA: also, what does "near" PDX mean? Like, Hillsboro?

Join the local roller derby team? You don't have to skate if you don't want to, you can be a scorekeeper or take up another non-skating role. In my experience roller girls are normally really friendly :)

are you there to work? do you have free time? do you have disposable income? take a class at the local college, or art center. Volunteering is also great.
I suck at making friends, though. Don't take advice from me.

If you have a hobby, look for locals that meet up...a stitch and bisque for knitting, as an example.
Putting together a PDX potluck in the square will definitely introduce you to vegans!

How exciting!
I've met some of the best people I know by volunteering. Also, the bike communty in Portland is pretty strong. Maybe go on a group ride? (I'm sure there's tons).
You'll be fine! I got a good feeling.

Our cart meetup!
Jobs and volunteering is where I met most of my friends after high school. A friend of mine moved to Eugene and made friends through book or Spanish club, I can't remember which.
There's also a Portland vegan meet up group called Viva Vegan and I've met some awesome people on there.
