At the moment, The Discerning Brute (which I think I might give up on soon because the posts often can be quite tedious) and Mämmi, which has just started up again after a long hiatus.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you were big?

I went through a "I wanna be an astronaut and a ballerina and a doctor and a librarian and a unicorn!" phase. Then I went through a "definitely going to be a writer" phase. Then I wanted to be a rock star, forever.

What do you remember about the internet when you first started using it?

I remember joining the chatroom all the other library kids were on when I was 11 (1996), and then discovering Star Trek fanfic and pretty much not leaving the house again til I was 18.

Same question: What's your first internet memory?

I remember installing the first internet browser from NSCA, mosaic. I remember thinking, "Hey that's neat." and then going back to downloading drivers on FTP and not really thinking about it much. There wasn't a whole lot to do then. This was in '93.

What is the best thing you have found on the internet?

The PPK, what else!

Do you prefer recipes from the internet, or from cookbooks?

Cookbooks, definitely! Although I do use both.

What's the best movie you've seen in the last year?

I just remembered this thread and I'm reviving it!

Hmmm it's tough to remember the movies I saw beyond a couple of months ago. I'll say Catching Fire.

What was the most exciting thing that happened in 2014 so far?

A slight snow... that is all so far. Here's hoping things heat up a bit (in a positive way)

What's your favorite recipe from Isa Chandra's books?

The one I've made the most is her regular chocolate chip cookie recipe. Mmmm.

What music would you use as an alarm to wake you up in the morning?

I like to wake up to the song Up by a local band The Black and White Years because it starts "wake up, it's morning, as pretty and pitiless as it ever was."

I'm kind of worried about the future. What are your brief thoughts on that whole baby-boomers all retiring thing that's happening?

Well, I was born along about the end of the baby boom, and a lot of us can't afford to retire. But in all fairness, I think a lot of us boomers tend to live above our means, and do not budget our money well. I will probably work until I am 62, though to get full retirement, I would have to work until I'm 70 (I've only been with the USG five and a half years, so 14½ more to go, at least for full retirement; I'm 56 now) I don't know. I do think that there comes a time in one's life when it is time to hang it up and let the younger folks take over. Personally, I'd retire tomorrow if I could.

Hmmm... favorite "unusual" cooking ingredient?

I like putting red miso in things. It adds salt and umami and makes things yummy. I'm not sure if it's "unusual" but when I share recipes a lot of people seem to be surprised by the miso. I think they normally just think of miso as miso soup or something.

What is your favourite type of apple?

I rather like Fuji's, though Jonagolds have a nice crispness. Granny Smiths for cooking!

What is your favorite "ethnic" cuisine? (Technically they are all ethnic, but I am thinking in terms of various Asian, Indian, Italian, Scandinavian, etc.)

I've hardly noticed it since I don't have a TV. I mean, I've seen that people are posting about it on FB, but I haven't really paid much attention.

If you invented a special Oreo flavor that doesn't yet exist, what kind of Oreos would I be chowing down on right now?

The opening notes to "Sweet Transvestite", because I know magic is about to happen. Of course, I have RHPS on the brain since I get to see it live next weekend for the first time in YEARS!

What's your favorite non-Isa cookbook? (because all of hers are awesome, obvs)

The Great Vegan Bean Book. That, and Isa Does It, get more action in my kitchen than all my other cookbooks combined.

What is your favorite kind of mushroom? Or if you hate mushrooms, what is your favorite root vegetable?

The mushroom in my mouth is my favorite kind of mushroom. (MMMMMMMMM, mushrooms.)

Tell us about a recent (or favorite) random act of kindness?

I've had some really great mushrooms at some fancy places. I'm not sure which is my favorite, but I will go with porcini because I had that at the SW Steakhouse in Vegas and that was possibly the best meal of my life. Also, I recently learned that most mushrooms are the same thing! White, button, crimini, baby bella, portobello, swiss mushrooms, champignons, and many other names are just different versions of the same mushroom. So weird.

What is your favorite genre of books and why?

Edit: Oh noes, someone beat me while I was typing this. So answer lutin's question instead:

The college I work at is having a Random Acts of Kindness week!

But yesterday I gave a lady I don't know a lift because her bus broke down and she had to pick up her kid from school. I was picking up a friend, but she was stranded so I thought I'd be helpful.

Complete this sentence: "When everything goes wrong and I have to run away and start a new life, I will become a WHAT?"

Do you work with anyone who you think looks like a TV or film character?
