I didn't realize this wasn't widely known yet, so I want to make it widely known! You can get vegan Girl Scout cookies! Here is how. You have buy from a Girl Scout selling ABC Bakers cookies to get vegan cookies. The other bakery some troops use, Little Brownie Bakers, does not have vegan cookies. The ones that are vegan are: Thin Mints, Thanks-a-Lots, Peanut Butter Patties, Shout-Outs, and Lemonades. You can double-check ingredients here: http://www.abcsmartcookies.com/cookies.asp If I've made a mistake about any of those, someone please let me know so I don't go on passing on misinformation -- but I'm pretty certain all the ingredients on those lists are vegan. If you go to http://www.girlscoutcookies.org, there's a field for you to enter your (USA) zip code and find out if your local GSUSA council is partnered with ABC Bakers. If not, you can go to this Facebook page ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/My-Daught ... 8664525198) which is set up to connect people who don't have a local source for ABC Bakers cookies with the cookies they want. I have not checked this out myself, but I would imagine that if you are outside the US and would pay for shipping, someone on that FB page would hook you up with cookies. I am not affiliated with Girl Scouts or ABC Bakers in any way. I am only affiliated with veganism...and with you having cookies. :)

Is red #40 lake vegan? Some of the cookies have it, and I always thought it was cochineal, but googling gives me mixed results.
I'm not necessarily doubting you, Choirqueer, I've just confused myself. Anyone know for sure?
ETA: And I am totally affiliated with spreading cookies!

ETA: And I am totally affiliated with spreading cookies! I re-researched this, just to make sure, having looked into it a few years ago but not recently. This is what I found. Cochineal and carmine are red dyes made from insects. Red #40 is a synthetic dye, made from petroleum. (Sources: http://www.snopes.com/food/ingredient/bugjuice.asp, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allura_Red_AC) Whether or not it's good for you is debatable, but it doesn't come from an animal. Glad you asked! Making sure the info is accurate is important!

Thanks! Those little scouts are out in full force where I live and they're all Little Brownie Bakers. Sad.

I went to the website but I can't figure out how to tell if my local chapter is partnered with ABC bakers. Where on the website can I find that? I can find a place to buy cookies, but it doesn't say who made them. Thank you for the information CQ!

You can also find them on eBay -- just use the names ABC uses that LBB doesn't.

Wait, so how do I find out if they're in my area? The Girl Scouts zip code link just tells me where the cookies are sold in general.

Yeah the sip code link doesn't differentiate between ABC and Little whatever bakers.
Conclusion: Portland Girl Scouts only seem to sell Little whatever bakers.

I had to get them on eBay. The area where my parents live used to sell ABC and they switched to Little Brownie last year. :( I found an eBay seller who was selling them for $3.50 with $2.95 shipping but he/she is out of Lemonades. :( But I ordered the other 4 vegan varieties.

I couldn't find the bakery information for my local chapter either. it looks like the program is over now anyway, they had an end date of Feb 24.

You cannot begin to know how relieved I am to think I can eventually, someday, have some of these again. I'm not even sure why I've always ordered them in abundance, but it's sorta traditional, I guess. Thanks for the good news Choirqueer!

Is there anyone with access to the vegan ones who would be willing to do a trade with me? I would like some thin mints and peanut butter patties (they were tagalongs back in my day) but I'm in Portland where there are only little whatever bakers. I would be happy to send money or send goods. Send me a pm. Thanks!

This zip code finder will give you a local council: http://www.girlscouts.org/councilfinder/ And at least for my area (Northern CA), the council brags about Samoas/Tagacraps/etc. prominently, so they clearly don't have ABC. If you're lucky enough to have a council that buys ABC, the council pages I've looked at have zip code searches for local booths.

When I put my zip in, it took me to the site for my local Girl Scouts council, which had a link that showed where the cookies were from. If it doesn't say on the local council website, you could contact them directly to ask. If you're able to see which kinds of cookies they're selling, check if they include Shout-Outs; those are only sold by ABC, so you will know that you're buying from ABC. If your local council is not selling ABC cookies, you can go to that FB page I linked to ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/My-Daught ... 8664525198) and get your hook-up.

http://abcsmartcookies.com/boothLocator.asp?cid=606I assume if my zip code has locations listed on the ABC cookie website, I can eat the vegan ones, yes? I'm going to hunt these cookies down! By the way, I looked up some Chicagoland zip codes and it looks like there are none!

Okay, I tried the link again and it turns out the GS council in Austin does sell ABC cookies. I don't know if they are still for sale though, the website showed the campaign ended last Friday.

I did some poking around, and yeah...I think we're boned. Boo to you Little whatever Bakers! I would totally eat the shiitake out of all of those.
