What about the fact/idea that we're not actually seeing, we're perceiving?

oh yeah, thats a good one. Our inability to be objective, selective perception, all that jazz.

The human brain actually is just one gray fascinating blob.

The fact that we had to make up and agree to call things what they are, and that everyone accepts that as truth. Everything is really just symbols and sounds we agree on.

I mean, 1+1=2, but only because we agree that there is something that means one, and something that means two. That the creature wagging their tail is a dog. What a tail is.

That we create words to represent new things all the time. If someone came up to me in 1989 and told me I'd be carrying the internet in my pocket on my smartphone, I'd look at them as if they had two heads. At one point Google was just a really big number. Now it's a verb.

Language is fascinating!

forking rainbows! (Because people already mentioned forking magnets and then inquired how they work)

That matter is ever really lost, it just changes.

In other words, the atoms that make up my eyeball may once have been dinosaur poop.

Whoa.

That I have an American accent. And a California drawl.

That when you peel back all the lairs of a person, there may not be anything there.

I used to have nightmares about that after a I saw a simulated picture of what the sun would look like from earth once it was close to burning out. Freaky stuff.

Colours freak me out. I had a friend in high school who was partially colourblind, and couldn't see purple. It blew my mind that he would never know what purple looked like, or even fathom it. It's not like someone can explain a colour to you. It would be like someone telling me that there's another colour out there than the ones I know. I wouldn't believe it.

The past. Especially the history of places I've lived in or spent a lot of time in. My apartment is in an old wool warehouse from the 1800s. My parents' house was partially destroyed by a fire in 1905.

Also, about my parents house, to think about how many different families have lived there blows my mind. My house has seen so many memories formed, traditions made....people have slept in my old bedroom, every night, years before I even existed!

No two snowflakes are alike.

I constantly wonder (and have like, as far back as I can remember) how many people are doing what at this exact moment. I guess sort of like in Amelie, but they make it a lot more fun sounding. I'm always wondering "how many people are crying right now?" and as I was watching The Cube last night I was wondering how many people were watching that. I figured, not many. I wonder how many people in the world would be my absolute best friend if only I could meet them, or if only we were both in different times.

This.

Also, that I exist. What if my mother had died as a child? What if my mother and father never got together? Out of all the possible outcomes of life, I was born. I exist.

And that every second someone is being born, or is dying. Constantly.

I gre up swimming in the ocean but I cannot stand swimming out where the water is deep, or swimming off the side of a boat. Who knows what's down there, and the vastness of the ocean, freaks me out.

When my first son was born I thought about this a lot. And just the banal - what if there had been a good movie on tv that night? I might have gotten pregnant the next night but it would have been a completely different child.

I do love the randomness of the universe.

yup, a guy in my psych class was freaking out over the idea that the red backpack is really only red because the cones in his eyes were interpreting the light that was bouncing off of it as red....he was all, "but what if my cones don't work right?! How would I know!?!"

my only famous person connection is that I am friends with Carl Sagan's son Dorion. He has written some great books, you should check them out! (also my kids used to live with Carl Sagan's ex-wife on the weekends...she is a famous scientist too).

Anyhow, back on topic. You know what blows my mind?

Haha, that's exactly what happened to me! All semester, in my Perception class, my mind was continually blown.

I love this thread, my mind keeps getting all freaked out, in a great way.
