This isn't a whine, I am just old and do not understand the newfangled boards.

I browse by room, not by new posts. On the old boards it was easy to enter, say, the Parlor, and know which posts were new.

Now I can't figure it out. There are circles next to each thread. Sometimes they are red. Sometimes there is a small circle in the larger circle. Sometimes there is a wavy square thing in the larger circle. Red, not red, who knows.
Sometimes there is a small piece of paper with the top right corner folded down between the circle and the thread title. Sometimes it is red, sometimes it is not.
None of these things seem to line up and indicate that this block of posts is new since I last logged in.

Is there a guide for old farts to understand these mysterious codes? Or will I be hauled off for forum reassignment? I think maybe I browse differently than most people so perhaps I am the only one with this problem.

What I understand so far:

Wiggly: sticky. Circle: not sticky.
Red page in the circle: there are new posts. White: no new posts. If there are new posts you can click on the other red page next to the arrow to take you to the first unread post.
With a black dot: a thread in which you have posted already. No black dot: we miss your wisdom.

The only thing I haven't figured out yet is why some circles have a big page and some a small page.

I think this reflects the number of posts in the thread. The more posts the bigger the page.

Isn't it the opposite? Topics with more than one page have the small page in the circle, but those only one page long have the larger page in the circle.

That's what I thought at first, but now for example this thread has a big page, while the tattoo thread has a small page, but 10 times more posts. Maybe how active the thread is? how many people are currently viewing it?

But... there is a guide/key at the bottom of the forum main page?

I have nothing constructive to add (having figured out only as much as you guys), but I'm glad I'm not alone. I thought I was the only one who doesn't really understand the helpful icons.

Thank you for asking this as I didn't want to be the first one to say I don't understand. Circle? Circle with mole? I don't know.

The hot or not icons do seem to be reversed. Huh.

It's also impossible to distinguish between a popular read thread and an popular unread thread.

Ooooh - those are pages within the circles! I thought they were bells - didn't know why, just figured it was another inside ppk thing I'd find out about eventually...

the unread ones have the little pink/red paper in front of the thread title.

but... new posts [Popular] and no new posts [Popular] look the same to me.

Alas, maybe I am also getting old.

Yeah, even the key is a bit misleading. New posts will also have a pink paper next to the thread title.

This is all well and good but it still doesn't make sense to me.
I have logged back on. I am in the Foyer. There are some posts at the top that are red (new posts!) followed by some that are white (no new posts) followed by some more that are red (new posts). However all of those threads have been posted in since I have last been on the ol' PPK.
And then if I scroll way on down the ol' page, perhaps even onto the next page, there are red posts (new posts!) that are not new at all and have not been posted in since yesterday.
I do not know how to follow this and keep track of things.

Red/pink signifies new as in unread, not new as in recent.

What signifies recent? I don't read every dang post on the board. On the old boards I could just scroll down to what what marked as new and read up from there.
This way I will have red icons all the way on the first page for the rest of my days here. Which are clearly numbered at this point.

Well the list is sorted by time, so that's all the indication of recentness (recence? recentity?)
I already forgot, how was it on the old boards? All the recent things were bold and once you read them they turned regular? What counted as recent? Oh, was it since the last time you signed on?

On the old boards, even if you hadn't opened a particular thread, it would get marked as read at some point anyway. On this board, it gets marked as read if you actually open the thread (and, if there are multiple pages of said thread, if you open each page) or if you click on the "mark as read" thing at the top of the room. I actually like this new feature, as if I don't have time to read everything when I am logged in, I can easily tell what I've already read.
