Tentacle-based hentai has become popular enough that it's basically mainstream. A couple of years ago, Harlequin decided to cash in on the trend and started publishing novels based on tentacle porn but without so many of the anime tropes that tend to alienate the more mainstream Western reader. The resulting Harlequin Tentacle Romance line never took off quite to the same degree as their more traditional romance novels, but gained a small but enthusiastic following, enough that they've been steadily publishing 2 or 3 books a year. This was one of their earlier titles and remains popular, although sales of newer books such as "The Cephalopod In Winter" and "Suction Cups at Sunrise" have since surpassed it.

The Harlequin Presents covers and titles are nuts enough that this could almost be true.

I cannot bring myself to google the veracity of either tentacle porn or solipsistnation's comments.

tentacle porn is very real, and i'm fascinated by its history in japanese erotica. it seems to express a lot about the country's relationship with the ocean. Tender Probings, not so much.

I thought one of the reasons it became so popular was because censorship in Japan did not allow penises. But i don't know where i got the information from so it may not be true.

That's a lot of it, yes. During the Meiji period, all pornography and public nudity was essentially banned, pretty much thanks to the introduction of Western morality. (That's late 19th century.) When the US occupied Japan after WW2, they rolled back all forms of censorship and instituted new free speech and expression laws (part of the Japanese constitution, written in 1947), EXCEPT for the ban on depicting nudity. As a result, since people do like to see nekkid people and stuff, the Japanese kept making porn, but censored just the genitals (since having sex on film is okay, but showing the actual parts isn't.) And since pixelated or black-barred nudity is kind of annoying, somebody decided that using tentacles would be a great idea, since they aren't wangs and thus don't have to be censored.

So there you go-- the US is responsible for tentacle porn. Go us, I guess.

Bizarre, this is the second time today that I run into this quote.

kinda related: I was searching google the other day for a very specific type of fretless guitar and I couldn't find anything. My nephew suggested looking for the exact same string of modifiers and then adding porn into the equations and holy crepe if I didn't find what I was looking for.

I do the web searches nobody else wants in their search history. So you don't have to. Turns out "Tentacle romance" is very nearly a thing, and there are people working to make it so.

Quote:
She looked down, and saw that her legs really were bare. The long, dull fabrics of her habit and her two layers of undershirts had been torn away and her legs were revealed up to the thigh, pink and indecently bare.

Around her legs, three strange serpentine shapes twisted and coiled caressingly. Sister Mary stared at them in wonder and fear. They were thick and dark, mottled like snakes, but so much warmer, and she couldn't see where they were coming from; there was only a small circle of light around her chair.

In the candle's dim guttering light, the snake-like shapes split apart, then multiplied. There were six of them now, casting long sinuous shadows. One of them slid up toward Mary's chest and gently tugged at the front of her habit, as if testing its resilience.

Mary breathed faster as the tentacles touched her more brazenly. There were four of them at her legs now, two around each thigh, two around each ankle, and they were so velvety warm. She wanted more of this forbidden touch; her skin hungered for it.

tentacle romance might be only very nearly a thing, but dinosaur porn has achieved full thing status.

I think it's a good thing I don't have computer access at work.

Also I checked my email while I was staying at my boyfriend's house and he was lazing in bed. When I finished he asked if I'd been looking at scandalous porn on his laptop. (I hadn't been reading this thread or anything.) I blame you lot.
