I live in Seattle, but I love Portland. I'm not necessarily planning to move any time soon, but I'm curious about how the two compare. Has anyone here lived in both cities? I'm wondering most about cost of living (housing particularly), transportation, the job market, and the general culture/vibe.

It's been a long time since I've lived in Seattle but I still have family/visit frequently. Housing is more affordable in Portland, transportation is much, much better, the job market - well, get a job before moving here, and the culture/vibe couldn't be better for vegans. I miss all the water/mountain views in Seattle, but otherwise prefer Portland.

Portland is far more affordable and much easier to get around in terms of commuting times and distance. It's a lot smaller. Seattle has more of a big urban city feel, is much more diverse and international, and has better access to lakes/the ocean in the city. Jobs are bad both places. There's a far better arts scene in Seattle. Better vegan restaurants in Portland, though there are also good ones in Seattle. It's cheaper to fly to/from Seattle because of the bigger/more international airport. Housing is far far cheaper in Portland, though getting more expensive.
