Hi guys,

My friend and I am having a short stay in Portland in June this year, and I was hoping for some suggestions on where we could stay.
We were thinking somewhere on the east side, as we are mainly going to Portland to eat all of the food.
I was in Portland two years ago and stayed downtown, but there was a lot of buses being caught to get to the food on the east side. I am planning on spending a lot of time at Back To Eden, but also visiting Dovetail, Native Bowl, Homegrown Smoker, Portobello, the mini-mall, possibly Hungry Tiger Too and Veggie Grill, and probably Bye and Bye or Sweet Hereafter, etc.
And any other amazing places that anyone might recommend. This is going to be three days of solid eating. ;)
Anyway, that is to give people an idea of where we will be spending a lot of time in terms of places that would be good to stay, any suggestions would be great!

Also, a totally random question, but does anyone know the name and address of a shop that sells vintage toys? I think it is on west Burnside maybe? I passed it one day when I was there in 2011 and I could glimpse vintage My Little Ponies inside, but it was closed and I don't remember anything else about it!

Susan :)

The toy store is Billy Galaxy, near 10th & W. Burnside, kind of catty corner from Powell's.

If you want something centrally located on the eastside, look into the Jupiter. Kinda hipster-y, but just a couple blocks from Sizzle Pie and an easy walk to the mini mall and Hungry Tiger. You could even walk to Portobello and Los Gorditos in about 20 minutes (? i'm a terrible judge of timing). Sweet Hereafter would kind of be in the neighborhood, too. Bus or car would be needed for the others you mentioned. Or a bike. Or a really comfortable pair of shoes and a bunch of free time.

This is kinda odd to recommend, but the Red Lion at the Convention Center is usually $99/night or less, on the MAX, near the new Streetcar line, and a bunch of bus lines - plus walkable to inner SE, for sure (I've been working with them and well, every other hotel that answers and offers a rate, for Vida Vegan Con).

For Jupiter, try 20OFF for a discount!

If you're worried about noise in a hotel, there is a vegan B&B: http://www.cherokeeroseinn.com/Home.html

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately Cherokee Rose Inn and Jupiters are both booked out for the weekend we will be in Portland. Is something going on there on the weekend of the 7th of June??

I had a look at Red Lion, and some of the other hotels around that area (though they are pricier than the Red Lion), and it looks nicely close to public transport. Also saw that there was a place on East Burnside, which seems to be a cheap motor inn. Though it may lack a certain charm, but is in walking distance to Sizzle Pie. Just waiting for my travel buddy to have a look and see what she prefers.

Thanks so much for the name of the toy store as well, vintage My Little Ponies shall be mine come June!! :D

Oh, if it's the Eastside Lodge (?), I hear it's recently renovated and nice enough! Friend of a friend who came into town type of word of mouth, ha.

Hotwire & Priceline's 'hidden names'/bid now are also worth a go in PDX if you feel like it.

That's during our Rose Festival and the Grand Floral Parade will be on June 8th. It will disrupt public transportation and generally be a mess.

Thanks everyone!
Will be interesting to see the Rose Festival festivities, something to entertain us between eating. ;)

Totally random question, does anyone know if Eastside Lodge has reception open late for late check in? We won't be arriving into Portland until about midnight. I cannot find an email address anywhere on the website, and even tried calling their number from Australia but the line was so bad I couldn't hear anything!!

I called them and they have 24 hour desk service so you can check in as late as needed.

A question for the Saturday when they are having the parades - are you able to actually walk across the Burnside bridge while the parades are going on? Or do they close them for the parade? Or you can walk across but you will have to fight the masses of spectators??

Heh. We might avoid that area on that day then. I need to go across to Billy's to look for vintage My Little Ponies, so maybe we will go there on Monday instead! Thanks.

Also keep in mind that Saturday the 8th is Portland's World Naked Bike Ride. So... there will be thousands of people cycling naked through all quadrants of the city that night. You picked a good weekend for a visit! :)

Stop by Sweetpea on Saturday and say hi if you're in the neighborhood!
