I actually had an account a while back, but forgot the email/password/username... Anyway. My name is Lindsey, and I'm from New Orleans. I'm starting Law School at Lewis & Clark in the fall, but looking to move to the city in mid-July. I'd love to find some opportunities to make some new friends from the area here. But I was also hoping that one of you may know of a place for rent. I have a dog, a cat, a chinchilla, and a squirrel. Finding a place that accepts pets has been difficult. I assume since many of you are also vegan, you likely have pets as well and may know of some options for me. My dog is a poodle mix and only 20/25 lbs. I'm hoping to find a one bedroom, though an extra small office area would be awesome for my caged pets so I can get sleep at night :) I'm trying to keep a budget of around $800 including utilities per month. Also, I've never been to Oregon so I don't know the best areas. I'm open to anything in Portland that allows me to get to Lewis and Clark fairly easily and has coffee shops/dog parks around for me to visit. I'll have a car, but the availability of using public transportation for most things would be great.

If you guys know of anything, please let me know. Thanks so much.

Rentals with pets can be really tough, but keep a lookout on Craig's List. And does Lewis & Clark have any listings? I think there are some older threads here on areas convenient to L & C, so check down the list. Welcome to Portland and good luck!

I will be PM'ing you in a second, actually! My apartments are tiny-ish, but they welcome pets and we're inner SE.

Try Star Metro properties for pet acceptance. They're a little skeazy, but they've been trying to update their image a bit. Customer service has improved. The buildings are older, but they have been renovating (we got new plumbing in ours last year; they still haven't finished painting the walls, though).

There are better property management places, but none with as lenient pet policies as far as I know.

I found a place! I actually found a basement apartment of someone's house in the SE area. It has a completely separate entrance. They are also fine with my pets! I secured the place. Now the trouble will be moving across the country with four pets. Haha.

Anyway, the apartment is more outer SE. It's near 101st. Anyone have recommendation on cool places to visit around the area?

Thanks so much for all the help and advice!

depending on how far south you are, the Montavilla area has a nice neighborhood. Good coffee, second-run movie theater, weekly farmer's market, etc.

If you're towards the Lents neighborhood, their farmers market starts up again in a couple of weeks at SE 91st & Foster. It's my very favorite to visit. http://www.zengerfarm.org/index.php?page=61

Congrats on finding a place!

We could probably name some more recs if you know the neighborhood name/major cross streets : )

Well, there's a MAX station, Portland Nursery in the mid-90s, and closer to SE 82nd & Division there's Van Hanh (all veg, volunteer-run Vietnamese restaurant) and a must if you like Asian groceries, just a block or two south of Division: Fubonn Supermarket

Get your hands on some excellent rain gear, especially if you are a cyclist or a runner (top to bottom). The city has just about everything you could ever want. Congratulations on Law School. You are hitting the city at the right time, the rain will ease you in. The rain is nothing like New Orleans.

Thanks guys! I'm super excited for an all veg restaurant nearby my house! We don't even have one in Louisiana anymore :( And the Asian Supermarket sounds perfect.

Also, any recommendations on where to find good rain gear? I'm not super outdoorsy (though I hope to change my ways with the move), but I'll still need to get a nice raincoat and stuff I assume.

Also, does anyone have issues with their dogs with the rain? My dog hates rain and turns around to come back inside when he walks outside and sees it. I just kind of deal with it here. It's usually not raining long enough to be a problem, and every so often I just have to clean up an 'accident'. I assume he will just have to adjust when we move?

There's a Columbia outlet store in Sellwood. My wife just got a swank rain coat for 50% off there.

Pretty sure you can get doggie rain coats too (no dogs carry umbrellas here unless they're tourists).

You're moving here during our dry season, so you'll have a couple months before you need to worry much about rain - unless we have an unusual summer.

But this might be a good time for a deal on rain coats!

I use umbrellas and am practically a local. My dog has a raincoat but she hates it. Nordstrom Rack often has deals on them. People raincoats not doggy ones.
I never pay full price for them though; check out Goodwills or yard sales. I got mine at a yard sale and it's awesome.

That's true! There's probably much more raincoats at thrift stores there as opposed to here. I'll be thrift store shopping anyway for furniture and stuff when I get there, so I will check out the raincoats at the same time! Thanks :)
