I moved! I now live in Lair Hill, which feels like a completely different city, after spending six months in NoPo. The boyfriend and I discovered Luc Lac (LOVE), and have hit the Veggie Grill a couple of times while we've been largely kitchen supply/grocery-less, but I'm wondering if some of you more Portland savvy folks can recommend good stuff in close in SW and downtown. In particular, I'd love to find a good breakfast spot or two...

Thank you!

Congratulations on your move! I love Luc Lac so much and would love to be stumbling distance from there on late nights. Other SW spots: Prasad and the Los Gorditos in the Pearl are the only places I know with vegan breakfast, thought they're just across the dividing line into NW. I'll be curious to hear of there are other secret places. For carts, Sonny Bowl, Bombay Chaat House, DC Vegetarian, Emame ethiopian (LOVE). East India Company has a separate vegan menu--you just need to ask. And Petunia's! Don't forget Petunia's and their killer xgfx donuts and bowls and pizzas and crazy gorgeous cakes. Food for Thought café in the student union at PSU is vegan and open to all. The Saturday farmer's market has Zuppa for delicious curries. Sizzle Pie. Vegan truffles at the Living Room theatres. And there's Departure for a space age/Miami Vice kind of experience, good views, a separate vegan menu, and good expensive cocktails.

On top of what MJ said (and I have to add more adoration for Emame's - that cart, the breadsticks at Give Pizza a Chance, Whole Bowl and Pad Ped from Ploy Thai were my fave carts when I worked downtown forever), there's also Chef Naoko for a simple, Japanese lunch on SW Jefferson, next door to the Loving Hut, Tasting East in the Paramount has a small vegan menu (though I've only tried the green tea kale chips so far, and wouldn't recommend them, but totally want to try more) and Laughing Planet/Hot Lips/Tandem Treats cart/Baan Thai (make sure to super specify vegan) and a Vietnamese restaurant by PSU.

There's a couple of vegan scrambles at higher end places downtown, like Bijou, Mother's (I think) and The Original (who may still have a foie gras burger, ugh), but I haven't tried any.

Oh, and if you're more in the SW Waterfront area, there's a Vietnamese-belongs-in-a-mall looking restaurant that apparently has a small vegetarian offering that I imagine has some vegan potential. http://www.bambuza.com/

Y'all hit most of the places I'm familiar with. You should definitely hop on the #10 bus out to Barbur Blvd. and hit up Barbur World Foods. They have baked-to-order fresh pita and all kinds of treats!

I work at an awesome bagel shop in Old Town (Bowery Bagels) that's on NW Broadway and Everett. I usually get the savory vegan schmear on an everything bagel with roasted veggies. There's a sweet schmear (both are cashew-based) and hummus too. Their granola is also vegan and delicious! Unlike Kenny & Zuke's/Einstein's/Whatever, Bowery doesn't have any weird dairy bullshiitake happening and no creepy egg wash! Yay!

You can also get your bagel fix at Fresh Pot or Stumptown, but Stumptown doesn't have anything vegan to put on your bagel :(

Bowery bagels are good. I like the savoury schmear.

I work right next to Veggie Grill (we should grab lunch sometime!), but I'm sad to say there aren't a ton of options down here.

I definitely love Bowery Bagels, but there is a bagel cart on 6th and Columbia called Rescue Bagels that I can't help but go to since it's so close. They use an egg wash on most of their bagels to get their stuff to stick (I keep trying to tell them it's dumb), but their salt, plain, cinnamon raisin, and whole wheat bagels are vegan. They also have the galaxy cream cheese.

There's an East Side Deli over here. Pizzicato always has a vegan slice. Let me know if you find a good breakfast place!

Oh, I forgot about East Side Deli! I used to go there a lot, and then get burn out, and then go back. Rainbowwine, did we both work in a certain Congress Center?!

Have you guys tried the D.C. Veg breakfast sandwiches yet? I had one a couple of months ago and it was cute and very comfort-foody.

Ha, nope, but close! I worked in Big Pink for a couple years and am now in PacWest. One extra block away from VG...sigh :)

I keep forgetting about DC Veg breakfast! I gotta try it out!

Ha, sorry, didn't mean to be a creeper!

A coworker today told me the new fish tacos at Veggie Grill are fantastic - must try soon.

Ha! Not at all. I was just kind of curious why this person I don't know wanted to have lunch with me!

If anyone is near the cart pod at SW 5th & Columbia (i think?), Love Belizean is worth the $6 it takes to get their beans and rice plate. Comes with a side salad and your choice of hot sauce. So simple, but so good.
