We're debating taking the MT Hood train around Hood River and Columbia River Gorge, or renting a car and driving to the coast (Astoria or Cannon Beach).
Which do you prefer?

I wouldn't limit yourself to the north coast; the Oregon 101 is my favorite drive, beautiful panoramas await south of Cannon Beach.

Also, Manzanita > Cannon Beach. And, maybe, Yachats > Manzanita.

Driving on the Old Highway through the Columbia River Gorge is one of the highlights of Oregon.

And stop by the Darlingtonia Wayside, if you end up driving down the coast; it's a kick!
