Hi guys! I'm supposed to be going to Eugene for a doctor's appointment February 13th. Since it's a 2 hour drive from Portland, I was hoping there would be somewhere cool I could go to check out so I can make a trip out of it. I'm not picky - a cool vegan restaurant, a fun local shop... anything. Do you guys recommend anything?

There's a good vegan/vegetarian breakfast place. http://www.morninggloryeugene.com

There's a good giant Goodwill and a pretty cool smaller Goodwill computer store: http://www.goodwill-oregon.org/GoodwillComputerStore/ (that's next door to the big non-computer-stuff store)

There's a good hobby shop. http://www.eugenetoyandhobby.com

That's pretty much what I'd hit if I were going to Eugene... There are other interesting things I'm sure. 8)

CORNBREAD CAFE!!!!!! I am in love with that place. I try to think of reasons that I need to go to Eugene just so I can go there. We ate there twice in one day one time.

I've also heard good things about Pizza Research Institute, but they've been closed every time I'm there.

Also, the Cascades Raptor Center was so cool. It's a rehab/conservation society. Most of the birds can't live in the wild again, and they have nice, large enclosures. Seeing a bald eagle eat a mouse was gross but cool. Also, burrow owls are adorable.

I didn't know they were real things. Neat.

Sweet Life is insane and has lots of vegan pastry items. Be prepared for a line up.

Morning Glory Cafe has some great breakfasts. Awesome, particularly if you go early.

Pizza Research Institute has amazing pizza.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! Some of them I can't make because they close early. I have class in the morning and my appointment is at 2:45. But I'll definitely check out the Pizza Research Institute and probably the hobby shop or the goodwill! :) And I'll have places to go for next time. It's a specialist, so I'll probably be returning fairly often! I wish I could make it to the Cascades Raptor Center! It sounds awesome!

This thread was useful to me too actually. Went down there today. I had a gift card for Keystone Cafe which was underwhelming but Vanilla Jill's made up for it. Next time we'll skip the Keystone and go to the Cornbread Cafe instead. :-)

I love Eugene! While it is definitely a smaller, quieter city than Portland there is often quite a bit going on.

The Eugene Weekly is the local free independent weekly - here's the link for their events calendar: http://www.eugeneweekly.com/content/calendar

The Whiteaker neighborhood is *the* hub for most things veg & otherwise happening. It's also a bit rough around the edges & quite hippy in flavor. The Wandering Goat is a great spot for coffee, vegan pastries, people watching & finding out about local events: http://www.wanderinggoat.com

Besides all the great suggestions folks have already shared (Cornbread & Sweet Life are personal favorites), I suggest having a look at the local veg advocacy group's website, Eugene Veg. Here's a link to their local veg guide: http://www.eugeneveg.org/pdf/2013/Where ... inks-1.pdf
And of course HappyCow is great for reviews & more detail: http://www.happycow.net/north_america/u ... on/eugene/

Hope you have a great time!

I actually ended up going to Cornbread Café! It was delicious! I'll have to try some of the other places when I go back in 3 months! I really want to go to the raptor center next time! Thanks for the tips!

My favorite place for coffee & bagels is the Wandering Goat. All the things in their little bakery case are vegan (usually cookies, biscuits, bagels, chocolate peanut butter bars, cupcakes, etc.). They make a mean biscuits & gravy (plain, or beer cheese biscuits). And the best coffee, which they roast in house.
The tempeh tacos and cashew based soft serve at Viva Vegetarian Grill are awesome (it's called 'vegetarian' but everything's vegan). Down to Earth is a pretty cute local shop, the one on Olive Street is bigger than the Willamette store. They sell plants and kitchen stuff. Right next to Down to Earth (on Olive) is Oak Street Vintage, which is generally expensive but fun to look through. Gorgeous old building. And there's Chocolate Decadence right next door, which has vegan chocolates, so tasty. I recommend the coconut buttons.
I used to not be into P.R.I., but I stopped at their new location, and the pizza was sooo much better than I remembered. Pear & pesto pizza (or you can just have it as a salad), and the spicy tofu pizza were delicious.
You already ate at Cornbread, but they switch up their specials sometimes and everything on their menu is good.
Hendrick's Park is gorgeous, and you get to drive through the old, ritzy part of town.
The river paths are lovely, especially if you're not coming down for a few months, then maybe the Owen Rose Garden will be regrown.

Not that I've heard of...unless it's super new or something.

This commenter claims there has been one for years. Now I'm worried my original post is wrong but I think he's just confused. Or a crasshole. Or both!

Yeah, as far as I know Eugene used to have Cornbread Cafe (before they opened a storefront), some vegan middle eastern place that closed, and they currently have just one vegetarian food cart called Viva Vegetarian Grill.

Yep, that is it.
Well, I mean, there are loads of other options as far as food. But only Viva for a cart. There are a couple of carts that have vegan options. I have not tried any of them.

Alexander's Great Falafel http://www.alexandersgreatfalafel.com/ is an all vegan food cart. It's one of Oregon's longest running vegan restaurants/carts.
