What about newish since 2015? I am making my annual trip first week of March and I am really looking forward to Falafel House (because when they were located in Slabtown, their gyro blew me away!), Black water and I hear Farm Spirit is great, but something about dainty vegetables doesn't do it for me.
Best place that would have an open kitchen at midnight on a Monday? (Getting in late night but I'm sure I'll be hungry.)
Best Thai and/or Vietnamese and/or SE Asian in general?
Best places to bring your omni friends (bars, brunch, dinner)?
NEW...I would add Harvest to the lists, particularly for brunch. It's vegetable-based, but I wouldn't call it dainty. I've been impressed on every visit.
LATE...probs Black Water? That or the usual suspects: Bye&Bye, Sweet Hereafter, Victoria (from the folks behind those 2), White Owl - all have late night, although more limited menus
SE ASIAN: For Vietnamese, Van Hanh on SE Division/84th is the most legit and fake meat. I'm also into Pho Van and Pho Jasmine. For Thai, I'm partial to Chiang Mai on SE Hawthorne, and for fake meaty-Thai, I'd say Thai Food Cafe (although they don't make their own curry pastes so I'd recommend going with noodles or stir fries). It really depends on what neighborhoods you'll be visiting in, because they are so many we could all start blabbing about, I'm sure. I had a nice meal last week at the newish Mee Gin Soul Thai on Hawthorne, too. Oh! But really, I'd add Departure into this SE Asian must if you haven't been or need an excuse (but, personally, the vibe eats away at my soul there).
OMNI...brunch: Juniors (but it's tiny, so, waits and smaller seating possibilities). Food: those Thai spots, White Owl, maybe Mississippi Marketplace/Cartopia/or Portland Mercado for the Latin cart experiences if it's nice out.
