Me & Nick are finally coming to the Bay Area in September. Yay! We'll be around between mid Sept & the first week of October, we'll be in & out of the city visiting Vegas, Yosemite and Santa Cruz and we're gonna be watching all of the 49ers games!

We have accommodation sorted but I wanna make sure we haven't missed any epic food places off of the list and it would be rad to plan some hang outs with people. We're planning on going to Veg Fest on the 28th.

I've split up the food stuff by location because we're staying in Berkeley and San Francisco... what've we missed? We both love Japanese, fried mock meats, pizza and epic breakfasts, neither of us like Indian food (I know!), we'd rather not eat at Supreme Master places, oh and Nick hates Daiya so a recommendation for a pizza place with anything else on it would be rad, we also seem to be missing ice cream places!

SF
Millenium
Gracias Madre
Ike's Place
Weird Fish
Benders
Cha-Ya
Source
Shangri-La
Herbivore (we know it's hit or miss but we wanna try it! Any specific things to order / avoid?)
Treat Machine Food Truck
Thai Idea Vegetarian
Sushirrito!!

Berkeley
Cafe Gratitude
Flacos
Cinnaholic

Oakland
Souley Vegan
Homeroom
Beer Revolution
Pepples Donuts

Timeless in Oakland! It's an all-vegan café with amazing baked goods and, recently, in-house lunches as well as brought-in lunches (Flacos and Hella Vegan Eats <3 <3 <3). If you can make a Sunday brunch you will not be even a little bit sorry.

I'd put Golden Era, The Plant, Greens, Papalote and Saha on the SF list. And Cafe Colucci on the Oakland list. And I'd remove Herbivore, Ike's and Cha-ya.

Bi-Rite has the most incredible chocolate coconut ice cream.

St. Francis Fountain for EPIC breakfast.

Saha!! If you must go to Herbivore, order the chicken shawarma. Stay away from the mains and go with sandwiches.

I'm missing you by two weeks!

Honestly the Little Chihuahua http://thelittlechihuahua.com/, Arizmendhi, and House of Bagels are three of my favourite spots in SF.

Oh and Burma Superstar.

Berkeley - Natures Express for fresh tasty burgers and wraps. Around the corner from Cinnaholic is a lil knitting/cupcake shop - they have cute vegan cupcakes!

I personally think the doughnuts from Whole Foods (the cake style ones at least) are better than Peeple's. I find Peeple's all kinda run together in flavor. Also if you do hit up WF in Oakland they always have Beyond Meat burritos, pizza or salad! I can't eat the stuff but boyfriend digs it!

Yay! Sounds like a fun trip!!

You're going to be in Santa Cruz? Malabar is a great place for lunch or dinner! And if you're driving up the peninsula from Santa Cruz to SF you can make a pit stop in Palo Alto (and see Stanford if you're into that. It's very pretty right now!) and get vegan fro-yo at Fraiche! Or go to Garden Fresh, which is vegan Chinese with loads of mock meats.

I would probably skip Herbivore and go to Gather. It's not a vegan place but they have a vegan charcuterie that is super fancy and delicious! They have a vegan pizza with a cashew cream, one fancy vegan entree, soup, salad, and dessert (not sorbet!) The menu rotates by what's in season so there's something different all the time.

Also in Oakland there is an underground vegan restaurant. The fall schedule isn't up yet but it's super fancy and he usually has a well-known musician give a mini concert before dessert: https://www.facebook.com/inthemoodforfood

I've put St. Francis Fountain on the list, I love an epic breakfast. Saha & Bi-Rite are going on there too... and Papalote. Is Golden Era not a supreme master place?

Rad, we're mainly thinking of Herbivore for breakfast / sandwiches so a chicken shawarma sounds great. What's vegan at House of Bagels? Just the bagels or do they have cream cheeses and stuff? Burma Superstar looks gooood! I've added The Little Chihuahua to the evergrowing list of Mexican places!

I can't believe we'll just be missing each other!

I love Beyond Meat and we'll try to check out the cupcake shop! I'm also happy to eat all of the doughnuts to see which are better!

Vegan fro-yo and Chinese sounds great, we might have to swing by Palo Alto either on the way down or the way back, I know we're going to Cupertino and Santa Clara so we should be going right past there.

Malabar sounds great too & I'll keep an eye on the underground restaurant's facebook page.

Golden Era is a Supreme Master thing, but you would never know it. They don't have all the in-your-face stuff. They are so super nice and the food is wonderful. If you're shopping in Union Square or in the Tenderloin (be careful!) for some reason, it's the place to eat.

If you have to choose between St. Francis and Herbivore for breakfast, it's St. Francis 100%. You won't be sorry.

I'd also consider Jasmine Tea house for Chinese, especially if you like mock meat -- they make the best in-house mock meats I've had. Udipi Palace on Valencia is great all vegetarian south indian and one of my fav restaurants in general.

Trying to think of a reason why someone wouldn't like Ikes...

Question about Ike's - is the vegan chicken they use Gardein? Also is it cleared up to be vegan & not veg?

That's why I can't recommend Ike's. The way they handled the egg in the "vegan" chicken thing was very, very bad. They knew for a LONG time and "didn't get around" to updating the menus or website. I don't trust them at all. If they had apologized and understood the seriousness of serving egg to people who don't eat egg, that would be different. But they really didn't give a shiz.

They're so good! My omni nieces love the desserts and my omni sweetheart says they make the best soy lattes, even. They announce the Sunday brunch on Saturday on twitter, or you can just go and be surprised!
http://twitter.com/Timelesscoffee

I also realized you'll be in town for Eat Real, which is a free three day sort of fair/local street food/food workshops event. No dish is more than $5 and there have been tons of vegan options every time I've gone (bao! falafel! empanadas! mac and cheese! sorbet! paletas! &c). PSA: The demos do include butchery; I just don't attend on those days. So far there haven't been any demos I am super interested in that fall on the same day as a butchery demo, so fingers crossed for this year. Anyways, I've always had a really good time and eaten delicious food there, so I thought I'd mention it!

I know, right? I may or may not be checking over and over. And over.

O! And the festival is down the street from Souley Vegan, which I know you're already planning on going to, jojo - and The Olde Depot, the only all-vegan pub in the area, which I think missmuffcake tried to go to? I haven't been yet but I'd be remiss in not mentioning since it's all so close!

There is also Xolo down the way (not 100% vegan but has vegan options), I have not had it but would rather go to something new than SV. I just feel SV has way to much hype for what it delivers.

I actually hesitated to recommend Xolo at first because the only as-is vegan options are salad and posole, but they are super agreeable about leaving queso off things: the tacos de hongos are delicious!!! So there are a few more options since they're easy-going. Their sister restaurant, Tacubaya, though their tofu divorciados sans queso used to be one of my favorite brunches, is no longer easy-going about such things even though they used to be.*

*I stopped going after they said they couldn't leave a sprinkle of queso off my order - an order I had made several times in the past! Harrumph. Hm, on checking it seems their menu has been updated with vegan options-on-request, actually, jojo, if you find yourself in the 4th St. area of Berkeley - but I've been scorned!

I read Xolo does vegan tacos and such. I am always looking for a good lunch spot that has a nice salad or small plates!

Also anyone mention Victory Burger yet? It is on my too do list and down the way from a friend's art gallery/junk shop...

Ooo, jojo, nobody's mentioned Lanesplitter yet! They don't use Daiya, they do a housemade tofu based cheese (which they call Notta Ricotta). They have locations in Berkeley and Oakland. And they do pick up and delivery if you're wiped out from your grand tour and want a quiet night in.

http://www.lanesplitterpizza.com/

The cashew cheese pizza at Gather is my favorite restaurant pizza, couroupita! (Though my favorite dish at Gather is the spicy lentils and polenta, yum.)
