A girl in one of my photography classes was studying abroad at my school last semester from Germany. Her boyfriend came to visit and now they're planning on traveling around the US before going back home. We were talking about travel last week and she said she'll be in San Francisco this weekend and asked if I knew of any places to stay or any tours to see the city.

Can anyone recommend any hostels or anywhere for them to stay for 1-2 nights or info about things to do? She's a super sweet girl and I'd like to be able to help her out. Thanks!

For staying in SF, I really like Hostelling International. I've stayed at both the city center and the downtown locations, and both are very nice; however, I felt a lot safer at the downtown location. Both locations are really close to BART stations, which makes travel to/from easier. I like staying in Berkeley a lot more than SF, though, so I stay at the Piedmont Hostel (http://berkeleyhostel.com/contact.html) several times a year. It's in a safe area and the people who run it are very laid back. Plus, they have a lot more private rooms at a cheaper rate than i've found so far in SF.

This is a bit late, but for future reference, I just spent time with some folks that stayed at the Adelaide in downtown SF. They said it was fine for their needs, tho it is not the nicest/most scenic area:

My friends said they would tell other people to take the bike ride to Sausalito and the ferry back.
BTW, I also took them to Muir Woods super early in the morning, and that was a big hit as well. Hard to get there during the week w/out a car & during the off-season, but weekends during tourist season there is a bus connection:

Dont rent a car for visiting SF city, though. you'll make yourself crazy and poor trying to avoid tickets. One of the other folks at the hostel had just gotten a fat ticket for not curbing his wheels (to prevent runaway autos) properly on a hill.
