Hey, proximal vegans. I'm a soft, sedentary vegan who just registered to join the 2011 PETA Pack. I plan to run the San Jose Rock and Roll Half Marathon on October 4th. Who else wants to? The Pack will start training on July 1st, so there's plenty of time to wallow in beer and cookies before taking the plunge. Personally, being accountable to a team will help me get off my asparagus and get in shape. Knowing the money is going toward something positive helps, too. Here's more information: http://www.peta.org/run

I was thinking of running that. I just need to decide if I want to run a half or a full in Oct.

I'm considering this. I've been looking around for another half marathon sometime in the future, and it would be fun to have a vegan team to train with!

I would, but I'm training for a century (bike ride) that I believe is in September, so I'm not going to have time to train for both.

I would do this if it wasn't to benefit PETA. It would especially be fun to have a friend to train with! Convince me that PETA isn't so bad and I'll sign up.

Yeah, I might be interested if it was for someone else.

You'll be pleased to learn that the money raised from this event is earmarked for PETA's Investigations & Rescue Fund. PETA's Fatophobia and Misogyny budgets will not benefit from the money generated by your rock-hard abs and indefatigable cardiovascular system. From their faq: PETA Pack's Fundraising FAQ wrote: That means your money can provide a sturdy doghouse to a neglected backyard dog who has no shelter, help rescue an animal from a cruelty situation, support our undercover investigators who are working to expose cruel conditions behind closed doors, and much more! I think that those are all good things. And frankly, I'm lazy. If another organization can make it this easy for me to simultaneously improve my fitness, meet like-minded people, and help animals, please edify me. Hooray for lobsteriffic and Veganismbot! You sound like veterans. The last time I ran for anything other than last call was years ago. Maybe you can teach me how to avoid shin splints.

It would be really fun to train with some vegans though. I'm horribly out of shape and could use the motivation.

Well the actual 1/2 marathon isn't to benefit PETA. Groups of people could commit to running it and then just train together...? Unless the actual act of signing up as a team and then getting the official PETA workouts is really important to you as far as motivation. But there are a gajillion 1/2 marathon training plans on the internet so a group could always just commit to one of those.

But but the real point is fund raising, which PETA makes very simple and straight-forward. Running the marathon is daunting by itself, let alone organizing an independent fund raising effort. I can imagine attempting that in the future. But at the moment, PETA's helping me get off my asparagus as painlessly as possible.

Oh I wasn't talking about you so much as I was talking about the people who were against fund raising for PETA. Sorry that wasn't clear.

Thanks for clarifying, lobs! But I do understand the hesitation of helping a fund-raising machine like PETA raise even more money. I think that the gratification and return-on-investment would be greater from helping smaller organizations. I just wish I had the motivation to organize something like that and run a half marathon. Maybe next time.

I though about it, and I won't be participating, but I still think it's awesome that you're going to do it! Alex and I know pretty much everyone in the East Bay doing the PETA pack thing if you want to get connected with them.

I really do want to try this just to see if I can do it but there's no way that I'm going to get anyone among my family/friends to donate money. Pretty much any money I raise will be from me or my bf. So can I still participate?

It sounds like the minimum is $15, which you pay when you register? Then it sounds like you also pay the race entrance fee. If you do it Autumn let me know! I probably won't do the PETA thing, but I was thinking of running that race anyway. I've heard Rock'n'roll races are pretty happening.

I'm not sure I'll do the PETA part but I'm pretty sure I'm going to participate in the event. It sounds like fun and I'd love to get back into running long distance. I have to warn you though - I'm a really slow runner. Hopefully that will change by October!

Are some folks still running this? PSA: registration fee increases as of 7/31. I have a $10 off promo code if anyone wants it.
