I'll be here December 25 - 30th and haven't done much of any research.

I'll be staying in Fisherman's Wharf around here but we've got no problem with taking public transport and/or walking 5+ miles

I'm willing/interested in Oakland as well.

Specifically we're interested in:

local business focused main streets

vegan food, both exclusive and omni places with good vegan options.

Affordable thrift stores

venues, is Slim's cool?

Museums, specifically WWII centered ones, I've heard good things about the USS whatever in fisherman's wharf and the USS Hornet in Oakland.

THX!

I winced when I read "Fisherman's Wharf" but if you're willing to walk, then you'll be fine! Slim's is cool, you'll also be super close to Bimbo's 365 Club, which is a really fun place to go see shows. You'll also be quite close to the Embarcadero, Coit Tower, North Beach, Chinatown, and all that other pretty stuff. As for food close to your hotel, there's a Trader Joe's on Bay Street, Liguria Bakery on Washington Square Park with the best focaccia and most of it is vegan, The Plant Cafe on the Embarcadero, Lucky Creation and Loving Hut in Chinatown, and The Nature Stop, a little health food store on Grant in North Beach. ETA: also Patxi's in the Marina, which has AMAZING Chicago deep dish pizza and they have daiya!

I'll let everyone else tell you where to eat elsewhere, or what crazy WWII stuff is around!

Oh and for affordable thrift stores Thrift Town in the Mission is the only way to go. I don't know how they have so much cool crepe and keep the prices so low considering the clientele and neighborhood.

Head down to Valencia street for some good walking around. There are lots of cool little shops and some good vegan eats around there (Gracias Madre, Cha Ya, Papalote's...). While you're in the neighborhood, if the weather is nice, you can also take a right off Valencia at 18th and head out to Dolores Park, a nice place to sit in the sun. If you keep going further that direction, you'll hit the Castro, which is a great neighborhood to walk around in. There's also Ike's Place (crazy asparagus sandwiches; lots of vegan selections) and Dinosaurs (banh mi) around there. Oh, and the Castro Theatre, with a real-live organ player is a great place to see a move. Then you could hop on a trolley, which takes you all the way back to your hotel.

Other neighborhoods that are good for walking around are the Inner Sunset, which has some good local businesses, lots of good coffee, and an amazing bakery (Arizmendi). It's also just a couple blocks from Golden Gate Park. You could also hit up Lower Haight street, which is less touristy and more cool than upper Haight (the Haight/Ashbury area).

As far as venues, I live right near Slim's, and while there are some good shows there, I wouldn't go there as a destination. It's fairly corporate and expensive and soul-less these days, though if there's something you want to see there, go for it! My favorite venues in the city are right near each other: Thee Parkside and Bottom of the Hill. You can check out www.foopee.com for show listings in SF, Oakland, and beyond.

Thrift Town is great.
I think the Musee de Mecanique is at Fisherman's Wharf.
My favourite food is Souley Vegan in Oakland. Also, burritos.

The best WW2-ish museum is actually by appointment only and isn't anywhere near SF, but if you ever have 2 month's notice of coming to SF again let me know. I'm always happy to make a trip to the MVTF. (It's quite specialized, but they have one of the only if not THE only fully restored Panther tank in the world.)

Bender's has good vegan eats. Not really convenient to Fisherman's Wharf though. I wonder if Erika or Jordan know of some place okay in north beach.

Oh, yes, Vesuvios!

There's also the Trappe, a Belgian place with great fries and beers, and Kelly's with a crazy tap selection, air hockey tables, and decent Indian food.

Definitely take the Ferry to Oakland and walk a few block to Souley Vegan.
