I feel like such a hip young thing, not only was I early to the party on Pizza Moda, but I got in on one of the Olde Depot's first weeks open...

the Olde Depot is right next door to Beer Revolution (same owners) and two doors down from Souley Vegan, on 3rd at Broadway in Oakland. It is an all-vegan German-style bar and grill! They have a decent beer selection of about a dozen drafts (but of course there are literally hundreds more next door if they don't have what you want), PLUS PIEROGIES. They also have pretzels, pommes frites with a million delicious sauces, currywurst, other snausages, and DID I MENTION THE PIEROGIES? I had the 'smoked' sausage with grilled onions and peppers, and I thought it was going to melt in my mouth. Delectable!

I ran into Maygles on the sunny beautiful patio. I look forward to spending many more drunken debauched sausagey afternoons with her there!

Me too! The cherry sausage Maygles brought home for me (along with the amazing pierogies) was delightful. This is going to be my new favorite spot, especially if patio seats are easier to come by than they are at Beer Revolution.

Ahhaha, I was checking to see if anyone had been yet! Sweet!

I am super excited about the PIEROGIES.

We went yesterday about 3-ish, it was so crowded and no one was eating, the menu had a bug on it, we were not even seated...to chaotic for me. :/ I might go back if there is ever a gentler time!

I saw my super awesome hairstylist last night, and apparently Olde Depot has been real hit or miss lately! The pierogies are no longer on the menu (which now sounds enormous and kind of confusing) and while she had disgusting onions rings, her friend went the very next day and said the onion rings were the best he's ever had.

Yeah, I was bummed to see that pierogies are off the menu now. I hope the onion rings don't suck when I go next because I will definitely be ordering them.

Wait. I thought the menu was all vegan.

I just heard they changed management and are going to have meat on the menu, under the guise of better serving the "community". Ugh. I hadn't been there yet because of all the accounts of bad service and bad food, but now I'm even more disinclined to go. Plus I don't really want to be surrounded by the smell of meaty sausages.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

I can't tell from the website if they're keeping all the old vegan menu and adding the new meat menu to it or if it's going to be a smaller menu overall. They do state they keep completely separate pots/pans/utensils for the vegan menu, so...there's that?

I guess the PIEROGIES are off the menu anyways. :(

I didn't think the management changed. In their dumb letter they tried to assure everyone that the owner is still vegan. Haha.

In one of the comment threads on their facebook page the vegan owner said she is handing over management to an omni guy who wants to serve meat. It's not clear to me if she will still be involved in any way or what.

Okay, yeah, forget that place. What annoys me is that the food is bad but everyone's going to assume the menu is changing simply because the food is vegan. I'm always happy to support a vegan business, but if you're literally going to be two doors down from Souley Vegan, you gotta learn to step up your damn game.

I got cheesesteak sliders last time I went and no. Just no. Soggy bun, rubbery seitan, snot-textured daiya, and what was evidently an extra 1/4 cup of oil simply poured on top for no discernable reason, left to cool to room temperature. I really don't think I'm all that picky when it comes to eating in vegan restaurants, usually I'm just happy they're there. But this was horrendous. Especially given how promising it was when they opened.

I think the first week they opened they looked great - then it just kinda went downhill from there.

The first week they opened they were great. I don't know who got fired or moved or what happened but someone made The Wrong Decision.

Apparently people are full-on protesting? Can anyone verify this?

I mean, it's kind of a bummer, but seriously, people, move on.

I understand why people would want to protest. It's not my thing and I wouldn't want to get made fun of by omnis, but I think it's fine if that's how they want to express their disappointment. It won't accomplish anything, but neither will writing letters or boycotting the place.
