I've never been to San Fransisco, (or California for that matter, I know, crazy!) but the hubby and I are planning a trip for mid July. I am SOOO excited for California food! I am hoping somebody who is very familiar or lives in SF could tell me the "MUST HIT" food spots. We will be staying near Union Square, and because I have never been there, it's really hard to tell by reading Happy Cow, or PPK posts what is near there.

Any other suggestions as far as sites to see, culture to absorb, shows, etc. would be appreciated!

Thank you!!

If you're staying in Union Square you'll be close to Millennium! You should definitely go there!

I just planned a Sep visit! So excited. We will be staying in Union Square so Millennium is for sure on the list and like Yoga Girl, I'm curious if anyone has any other suggestions.

Gracias Madre, The Plant (the one on Embarcadero has great views), Greens and Burma Superstar are the places I would say you shouldn't miss. If you make it to Berkeley/Oakland, try out Cafe Gratitude, Souley Vegan, Cafe Colucci and Cinnaholic. Also, Patxi's has delicious deep-dish pizza with Daiya. Have fun you guys!

Edited to add: Also near Union Square are Golden Era and Saha. Golden Era is great for Asian takeaway. And Saha is just completely fantastic.

Thanks so much Alin! I googled some of those places this morning and I'm hungry already.

I'll throw Benders out there -- best example of vegan bar food -- bbq seitan/chiken sandwhich, tacos hotwings tots etc. etc.

It's not a restaurant really, but the Ferry Building farmers market is fun to walk around, and there is a Pepples Donuts kiosk inside (amazing fritters). Ciao Bella usually has a few flavors of sorbet too. The biggest market is on Saturdays, but they're there Tuesdays and Thursdays too.

Mariposa in the Ferry Building has delicious vegan and gluten free treats. And it's an easy walk over to the Plant for a proper lunch. I always take out-of-towners out there, good tip Erin!

I have to second Saha. SO GOOD!

Thai Idea vegan is over on Polk Street. There's obviously Souley Vegan over in the East Bay as well.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions! I just got back from my trip Monday night, and I'm already missing it! We walked EVERYWHERE which is my preferred way to get to know a city, and I strategically mapped our adventures around some of the food suggestions here :) Millenium was awesome. If I lived nearby I think I'd hit that place up if nothing else but for the cocktails, which was a nice surprise (I was just thinking food food food). The White Russian was incredible. We also managed to fit in The Plant, Greens, and Gracias Madre. OMG Gracias Madre. Nothing but mad love, it was so so good. Thanks again guys.
