Quote:
The Portland-based chain of neighborhood markets said Tuesday it is acquiring Bay Area-area chain New Leaf Community Markets, a similar group of stores in northern California. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

New Leaf employs about 600 and operates 8 stores in Santa Cruz, San Jose, Half Moon Bay, Pleasanton and Capitola. New Seasons Market chief executive Wendy Collie will oversee the wholly owned subsidiary from Portland. But New Leaf's management team will operate from Santa Cruz. Its founder Scott Roseman will join New Seasons' board.

All the stores except Felton and Boulder Creek, which are owned by somebody else.

Huh.

I mean, I realize this is not my subforum and it doesn't affect me exactly, but long ago there was a locally owned grocery store called Nature's in Portland, and then it was acquired by GNC maybe? And then it was bought out by Wild Oats and then they all became Wild Oats and then Wild Oats was bought out by Whole Foods and then they mostly closed. And I think some of the people behind Nature's started New Seasons shortly after it was bought out by Wild Oats (I might be remembering this wrong, I was a wee child). And it was exciting because it was locally-owned like Nature's used to be! And now New Seasons is buying out other grocery chains. Circle of corporate life I guess.

What should be interesting about New Leaf to San Francisco Bay Area vegans?

I don't think the buyout necessarily means that New Leaf/New Seasons is coming to the greater Bay Area- I think they're just going to be taking over the existing New Leaf stores in the lower peninsula/Santa Cruz area. It's a nice grocery store with great vegan options that I like visiting when I'm near one, but it's nothing remarkable that, say, Berkeley Bowl or Rainbow doesn't do for us up in the Bay.
