Frick yeah. Anyone know if this is a pooch-friendly event? I'd like to bring my sidekick.

Pepper!!!

I honestly don't know! Other pop-ups I've been to in the space have had a few pups; there's a garage/gallery and then the eating area is outside. Maybe call Classic Cars West to check? I'll see if any of the event info mentions it.

The only addition to the lineup I have today is Rhizocali Tempeh! If you've never heard of them but have eaten tempeh prepped by Hella Vegan or Pepples, you've likely eaten their tempeh.

I sadly don't have an official pup companion but I'll be there!

Super bummer! I went and had to leave because there was nowhere to sit and we'd only moved 10 feet in a half an hour! (I'm a few weeks away from my due date and can only stand for half an hour lest I keel over.)

It's crazy crowded and the lines are crazy long - at least twice as long as when we left. So be ready to stand a bit! And post pictures of your food so I can live vicariously.

I went right at 11 with a friend and that is the only reason we were able to get anything to eat! We had the lusty lovers tacos (holy shiitake omg) and split the fried chicken sandwich from HVE, and then I grabbed a strawberry ice cream sandwich from Curbside (excited to hear about their new shop opening up in Temescal Alley!).

But yeah, it was insane. The plus side is that it shows how crazy in demand vegan events/food is in the Bay Area! It's definitely a good argument for moving the next one to a bigger space and/or having more vendors next time. Since they are planning on doing this twice a year that could definitely be a thing.

The downside is that it was so typically Bay Area Vegan in that everyone was such a huge flake. The only places officially open for business when I arrived at the start time were HVE, Timeless, and the Commonwealth bar. Curbside showed up right after 11am, but since she was just a bike with a cooler compartment on front, she was ready to open upon arrival. S&M vegan was still getting set up and in fact when I left at 12:30 they still hadn't officially opened despite a line for days. And damn, that sandwich looked good- I really wanted to try it. I didn't see hide nor hair of the tempeh folks or the other bakery/coffee place. I totally love our vegan businesses and want to support them, but they really need to truly get their shiitake together. It's hard enough to open a brick & mortar place in the Bay Area (I know from personal experience), so getting the money/following/word of mouth you need to get established as a caterer/food truck is really important, and you're not gonna do that if people are still waiting for your allegedly delicious food 90 minutes after your open time.

m.t, I'm sorry you had to leave! I'm also sorry I didn't get to run into you and say hi- but given how crowded it was, I figured that wasn't going to happen anyway!

Erika, I'm sorry I didn't get to run in to you, too! I usually show up at opening for these kinds of things but had a quick errand to run first - and showing up at 11:20 made all the difference! I seriously never got more than 10 feet past the gate. Lesson learned.

As we were waiting in line someone who think was a volunteer - she had that kind of panicked can't-find-where-I'm-supposed-to-be vibe - asked me if I knew where S&M Vegan was. I guess they hadn't even shown up at that point? I agree, the flakiness of our vegan businesses is no good. I'm just like, get it together and let me love you already!

Curbside Creamery also vends at the Grand Lake farmers market so I might have to catch her there next weekend since I missed out on the ice cream sandwiches too!

We got there at 12:30, walked through the space and saw the absolutely ridiculous lines, and walked right out. Nothing is worth waiting that long or dealing with that level of crowd. We went to nature vegetarian and the Berkeley botanical gardens instead! Hope they work out the logistics better next time.

I was feeling so guilty for not going to this, but I feel better now! Better luck next time. I feel for the organizers, noone really knows the work required to run a festival until they try. It's a staggering amount of work and a touch of luck to have one go smoothly.

Oh, I know! I've worked in logistics and executive support in the past, and have coordinated 4-times-a-year board meetings (and one house of delegates meeting) for a national organization. If this were my event, first thing I'd do in preparing for the next one is give S&M's booth (and the ones for the tempeh and the other bakery) to a vendor that will show up on time.
