I got a pretty sweet internship with Lawrence Livermore National Labs and I will be working there from early May to mid August. Unfortunately, it's kind of hard to find a room for rent or apartment that doesn't have a 6 or 12 month lease requirement.

If anyone lives in Livermore or near the lab and has a room to rent to another vegan for the short term, please let me know! (Or spread the word if you know someone who might have a room.) I would be super excited to rent with another vegan for obvious reasons, and then you can show me all the awesome places to eat!

Thanks!

I wish I could help, but my place is an hour from Livermore without traffic (and there is always traffic). Congrats on your internship, that's big news! I know some folks in the Hayward area, which is a shorter commute. I will ask them about any spare rooms and/or sublets for your time period.

Have you looked at AirBnB? They have shorter term spaces. I would also think you could find something to sublet on Craigslist. Your timing is a bit off the student schedule, maybe you stay somewhere for a few weeks and once the kids leave for summer more places will open up.

Not helpful at all...but I saw Livermore and couldn't resist opening the thread. I was actually born in Livermore, as my Father was working at Livermore Labs at the time...I haven't been there in nearly 30 years though.

Funny where things and places pop up...

I'll ask my friend who lives in Livermore if she knows anyone looking to rent.

Congrats on the internship!! I'd love to hear your impression of the place once you're finished. I've considered working at LLNL for ages.

Looking into a cheap room ($500/mo) in Antioch, but it seems a bit far from the lab.

Hoping something better comes up, let me know if anyone is interested.

I haven't heard anything from my friend.

Antioch is pretty far, that's a 45 min drive each way without traffic or are you thinking of BARTing?

You're checking craigslist, right? There are a few places in livermore for $600: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/roo/5508830730.html

You could also look into the other side of the hills, like the Hayward/Union City/Fremont area. There's a commuter bus that goes to Livermore on weekdays. Pretty trafficky but it will also be more comfortable in the summer months.

Did you look at their housing page? http://students.llnl.gov/pages/housing

Yeah, I've been checking craigslist and kangaroom and etc. I've sent out a half dozen emails to places, they are usually already taken, or they promise to send me pictures of the place and never do.

My adviser recommended against Antioch for the same reason, it's a long drive each way.

I found the Antioch place on their LLNL housing website, and also a lady who rents out of multiple homes. She was supposed to call me for an interview Sunday, which got rescheduled to Monday, and then to Wednesday and it still hasn't happened. So I'm pretty much over that person and back to zero prospects.

Studying for a test tonight, but I plan on looking at listings again this weekend and sending out e-mails and calling people.

Would still be more open to a vegan friend, but I'll just be happy to have secured a place at this point.

Thanks!

If you're running out of time, AirBnB might be your best bet. The great thing about AirBnB is they only show you things that are actually available and the "landlords" are usually very keen to fill the space.

A lot will depend on your transportation.

If you have a car or bike, things open up. Except in traffic.
Go to 511.org and see what Bay Area traffic is like, commute times, etc. there's a great multi agency transit planner on the site.

I live in Oakland. I worked on Fourth Street in Livermore for a year. As a reverse commute, it wasn't bad.
As a driver from Colorado looking at Bay Area traffic, it was hideous.

If the lab has an employee shuttle from BART, that is a treasure.
I'm assuming Wheels, the bus in Livermore, goes to the lab, as well.
