It's getting to be that time of year, and I just bought a Vitamix. For the next four months every other meal will be fruits, veggies, and homemade oatmilk, blended beyond recognition. I go to the market at Rittenhouse on Saturday AM because it's right there. It's not really that good, and it's not really that cheap. I guess old money is willing to pay WhoFoo prices on the sidewalk, but not me.

That is ALL I know about where to get produce off a sidewalk or out the back of a truck. So how about sharing with us that secret spot - market, truck, stand, whatever - that I don't know about?

I dont actually live in the city, so I dont know any secrects. But I would the Italian market would be good. Or, you could hop on Patco and go to the Collingswood farmers market. And I did just read an article about a new huge indoor farmers market opening somewhere over by the airport, I think.

Im jealous of your Vitamix!

My cheap go to spot is the produce truck on 44th and Walnut. Almost everything is $1, if not, it's still reasonably cheap. My favorites include the $1 bags of 4 lemons, chiles of all varieties including scotch bonnets, potatoes, onions, 3 bell peppers of all colors for $1!! basically its great for the basics and ethnic produce. Go there early in the summer to ensure the freshest produce possible.

My other favorites for cheap, organic produce is Mariposa co-op (can't wait for blueberry and strawberry season proper), Clark Parks Farmers Market, and Greensgrow Farmers Market.

Philadelphegan, I think we've already established that we live close to each other, and I go to the Rittenhouse farmers market too, so yeah, good, we live close enough for me to come over every day and use your Vitamix. Great!

Elli YES the 44th & Walnut truck was my faaavorite. Boyfriend used to live a block from it. I miss it!

Are the Fitler Square or Headhouse markets markedly better than the Rittenhouse one, does anyone know?

I'm a fan of the Headhouse farmer's market. Not the cheapest, but some deals are surely to be had and I like the variety of farmers there.

Do I smell a vitamix party? No wait, that's just old kale in the vitamix again. I'm still learning.

I haven't been to Fitler Square - when is that? Have they started yet? Last year there was a small thing at 26th and Pine - I never got any of their (very limited) produce, but I'd occasionally grab a fruit or baked good on my the Dog Park.

I just googled up this 2011 schedule (.pdf) with an apparently comprehensive list. Although they're not really secrets, of course. I mean, they're on the webs.

Definitely checking out 44th and Walnut!

Oh, and there's this Sunday-market opening up near everyone's favorite vegan coffeeshop. Great. I can restock on produce and get a vegan bagel and go all Charlie Kelly on the girls at Grindcore.

Yay vitamix party! Vitamix should pay you to give demonstrations to potential/wannabe buyers, like me.

(I still haven't been to Grindcore.)

I live in the 'burbs but go down to Center City on the train to see my sons ... have never bought, but looks like several nice produce markets in Reading Terminal Market.

Yeah I know how that'll go. You'll pretend to listen, with interest, to my dog-and-pony show, but we both know you're just here for the free samples.

Because it's so far away?

I agree - lots of good stuff. I walk over there almost once/week to get produce and fresh beans from Old City Coffee. It's a bit of a hike - about 3 miles round-trip, so I don't have time in the middle of the week. Also, it seems like a lot -- at least some -- of the produce is not locally-sourced. But it is a great market.

I mooch rides off my friends with cars on occasion. I try to fit it into whatever we're doing that requires a ride, even if it doesn't make sense. E.g...

Oh hai let's go to Ikea... and stop at Grindcore on the way!
Driving to your Gramma's funeral in West Philly? Drop me off at Grindcore on the way?
Not going anywhere at all today and sick of me bugging you? Just gimme the keys...

Etc. I also rides my bike. But a friend just died on his bike, and now I'm afraid of leaving the apartment.

Wouldn't it be great if the old Walnut Street Coffee location was Grindcore-esque, when/if it ever re-opens?

Yes! That would be sooo great. I used to stop by walnut street coffee all the time when I lived on 22 and walnut on my way to class or before overnight cram sessions. It would still be super convenient and I would stop there all the time. I only make it to grindcore if i'm running errands in s.philly and lately i've been debating grindcore for an iced almond milk late and extravagent vegan treat (hello, that terimisu they have is amazing) vs. b2 for an iced coffee and a cone of yummy yummy softserve.

Speaking of softserve, blackbird should totally offer softserve icecream. I am pretty sure Mark told me they have gianna's old machine...put some temptation mix in that bad boy, my summer would be made.

Shut the front door! If Grindcore starts making Vegan Soft Serve I will be going every weekend!

Randi, are there no buses that can get you close?

Elli I've told you that I plan to have a vegan softserve franchise around the world, have I not?

Yes, Phil (possible nickname, not very clever?) I am sorry to hear about your loss as well. That is terrible.

Randi get on it! Stop this law stuff madness at once and start feeding me vegan soft serve!

Does it count as "not saying pharmers" if you say "I didn't say pharmers"?

I blame myself for the nickname - it doesn't lend itself to nicknaming, does it?
And thank you (and Randi) for the kind words. It is a sad and tragic loss, and I have sworn to never ride again without a helmet.
