I'm planning to go on holiday to Orkney this summer. Does anyone have recommendations for things to do, see and eat?

We'll be staying in a self-catering hostel and I'll bring food with me, but if there are any nice cafes or places to eat that would make a change.

We plan to go walking and to look at some of the ancient sites, but I thought I'd check if the PPK knows any local secrets I shouldn't miss.

Hi there,

It's about 5 years since we were there and like you we booked to stay in a SC place

There's one Indian restaurant in Kirkwall that offered vegan options (not a menu as such), everywhere else seemed just to offer surf and turf type menus and we didn't even see much by the way of veggie food.

The only local food we found for sale by the way of veg were totally sweet tatties, brah, farming is very meat driven oh but one local organic box scheme who sold us some veg (Wheems?)

It's a beautiful place and we really enjoyed the cliff top walks watching the sea birds that come very close

Hopefully vegan options might have improved over time?

ETA: i have no idea why it's repeating the words like that. unless it's a new filter? testing: totally sweet tatties, brah
ETA2: yup. is this the first instance of a recursive filter on this forum?

Yeah, Dil se (the one entry on Happy Cow for the area) looks like a restaurant with alright options. It may be very welcome as we might have to go home by a ferry leaving at 11pm, having been kicked out of the hostel at 10 am that morning.

It seems there are a Tesco, Lidl and Co-op in Kirkwall so we should have familiar options for bread etc.

Now I need to look up the Orkney Brewery on Barnivore as their beer has very pretty labels and has won awards!

I have no idea where 'totally, sweet, or brah' came from. Only spotted them when it was too late to edit

Having a PPK forum mare of late as unable to login with my old name of chools so created this new account

Hope Greenduck enjoys Orkney despite my unusual reply

you wouldn't be able to edit them out, since they're part of a forum filter for the word many Scots use to refer to potatoes.

How did that filter come about? Did someone think totally sweet tatties, brah sounds like tortes?

I'm confused by the repeating, but look, if you keep quoting it keeps repeating!

Poor you re waiting, had a similar experience visiting Shetland this year. Spent a long time in their excellent museum that's near the ferry terminal

I think that filter was from someone using the word for potatoes to refer to tattoos.
