i realise this might be a long shot, but has anyone travelled to Shetland as a vegan? The series I'm reading is making me want to visit, but since Happy Cow only listed 2 hfs's and no restaurants, I'm just wondering if it's doable (preferably without self catering since that defeats the purpose of a holiday).

I haven't been to Shetland, but a quick search turned up a couple of things:

South Light Guest House on Fair Isle: http://www.southlightfairisle.co.uk/
Da Böd wildlife sanctuary and cafe in Hillswick: http://www.shetlandwildlifesanctuary.co ... 20Cafe.htm

The Fair Isle ferry is actually called the Good Shepherd and you can stay in the light house! It would be like living in the book! (I am seriously tempted to visit now).

I have travel to Shetland as a vegan but I didn't eat there so I'm not any help really. (I was working on a ship so ate my meals there) I hope you have a good time if you go.
