My partner & I are going to England for a long weekend in November. We'll be staying near my family in the Midlands, with one day in London to see a play, and I'd like to have one amazing, terrific, no holds barred, off-the-charts restaurant meal while we're there. So tell me, PPK, where should that be?

There's no real vegan fine dining in London, aside from Vanilla Black (which is a vegetarian restaurant that gets mostly poor reviews from vegans). Are there any places you already have in mind that we could comment on? Any types of food you love/hate?

You could go to Mildred's in Soho .... http://www.mildreds.co.uk/

not completely vegan but there menu is marked to show which dishes are ...

we have been there a couple of times and I would certainly go again ...

I agree that Mildred's is good, I do love their food and it's possibly the best option, but if Desdemona's looking for something off the charts amazing I agree with MessyVeggie. Mildred's probably won't meet those expectations. Hopping on a train to Brighton to visit Terre à Terre would be your best option D but I'm not sure if that's feasable!

I like manna and The Gate, but both are a bit further out. Mildred's has nice food, but isn't super swish. Have you thought about Woodlands indian restaurant as an alternative?

I haven't been to Manna or The Gate, but both look interesting. We also love Indian, so we'd definitely be open to that as well. Unfortunately a trip to Brighton isn't on the cards this visit, but it's definitely bookmarked for another time! We've been to Itadaki Zen and loved it, but I was thinking something a little more "special occasiony."

I seem to remember johnp was at The Gate earlier this year- you should ask him about it!

I said to Bry, "Where in London was that place we had a great meal recently - that I thought was better than Terre a Terre?". He said, "it was David Banns. In Edinburgh. About five years ago.". I guess I don't get out as much as I'd like to...

If you're thinking of The Gate, the Islington restaurant is close to the wonderful Almeida theatre, and the Hammersmith one is right around the corner from the Riverside Studios.

For a fancy meal in a nice setting, Messycook and I enjoyed the vegan dinner at the Hyatt Regency but the desserts were awful, just awful. That was a special menu they had on and there were 2 options for each course, but I don't know if that's still on.

I had a superb vegan meal at Vanilla Black when it was in York but I haven't been since it's moved to London. They will email you their current vegan dishes if you ask though (not marked on the website for some stupid reason). It does change reasonably often so will be different by the time you visit.

Mostly London food is comfort food, nothing outstanding. That said, I almost always enjoy Manna, but I tend to go for Ethiopian or Korean when I'm down there now. I guess it partly depends on what you can and can't get at home?

If you're in the Midlands you could come to Nottingham for an amazing, terrific, no holds barred, off-the-charts burger at Annie's. Just sayin'....

I loved Manna when I went a few years ago for my birthday. Went to Mildred's last week on a visit and it was great but not as fancy

I'm leaning towards Manna or The Gate. Woodlands always gets raves, but we eat and cook a lot of Indian (and will certainly get at least one Indian meal while we're there), so it would be nice to have something a bit different.

If you like Indian food, Sagar is fantastic. All veggie but you just ask for the vegan menu.

Mat.

For Indian food, I really like Chutneys vegetarian restaurant near Euston Station.

My favourite place to eat in London at the moment though is the vegan cafe Black Cat in Hackney, particularly for their cooked breakfast!

I haven't been to Manna but had a great meal at The Gate.

Chutneys' masala dosa is great.

I'm seconding a vote for a Woodlands restaurant. I used to eat at the one near Bond Street station, and it was all kinds of delicious.

The Gate is pretty good but I recommend checking out their menu before you head over there. Sometimes they have a lot of exciting vegan stuff but othertimes it's not very inspiring!

Hope you enjoy yourself, whatever you choose

If you're down from the midlands for one day only and want something special, definitely recommend Manna.

The food is excellent and its a lovely restaurant in a great location. Primrose Hill is very pretty and a couple of nice pubs nearby too. It isn't central but its nearest tube station, Chalk Farm, is only a couple of stops away from Euston, which you might be leaving from if you're going back to the Midlands?

Mildreds is great, not as 'high end' as Manna but right in the heart of Soho, so if you want to go somewhere with a bit of buzz and check out a few bars then that's a good choice too.

Woodlands on Panton St is good and might near where you're seeing your play.

We're going to 'Tis Pity She's A hors d'oeuvre at the Wannamaker Playhouse. I've gone to the Globe every summer but one since the preview season, but this will be my first time at then Jacobean theatre and I'm super excited for it. We'll be in the Midlands the rest of this visit so I'll also get a chance to see The Witch of Edmonton with Eileen Atkins at the RSC, which is a particularly great opportunity because it's one of the primary texts in my dissertation's witchcraft chapter. It's kind of irresponsible to slink off to England for five days in the middle of the semester, but ask me if I feel guilty!

Spoiler: show
I don't!

Haha oh ok sounds great! The filter is amazing here.

Also, Manna is my favorite non-Indian or Ethiopian place in London. It's a pain to get to and it's definitely more comfort foodish, but really solid!
