I wondered about that. We've visited the north a good bit, but maybe it's just not come up before. :)

A certain soda or does any soda do just fine? I thought you could only do it with root beer (based on my childhood experiences) but upon reflection I think orange crush & vanilla ice cream would be awesome as well.

I don't know if Waitrose still does this, but a friend of mine works there and he mentioned to one of his higher-uppers that I was vegan. A couple of days later I ended up with a huge catalogue of vegan friendly products they sell. I think it's a general catalogue so not every Waitrose stocks everything on there, but it's pretty handy. And I think they update it fairly regularly.
I was told they're usually pretty accomodating of different diets, and give out gluten free/vegan/etc catalogues, if you ask for them. It was pretty nice being able to buy their belgian ice buns, but it's been such a long time i'm not sure what is and isn't vegan. Haven't had a catalogue for a while.

Most supermarkets (inc waitrose) have been publishing "vegan suitable" lists (available on request) for 10+ years.
They tend to be so laughably inaccurate however that I lost all faith in them long ago....
Useful as a general guide for new vegans as to things that might be suitable, but don't assume that anything on there doesn't need the same level of scrutinization you'd normally give to a product (check ingredients list etc).

The Waitrose Belgian buns are rather scrummy.
I remember the Tesco vegan list being done in collaboration with the Vegan Society, or at least having their approval.
The best thing about the Co-op is that they mark which wines are vegan. It makes up for the fact that their cheapy soy milk is not.

Yeah they were quite useful for when i'd just started out and wasn't doing my own food shopping, but I only ever used the Waitrose list for the buns! I try to avoid supermarkets where possible, just because the HFS round here tend to be pretty good. And when you're cooking for one (sounds lonely hah) there's not much point doing a huge supermarket shop.
I just bought a Co-Op vegan wine. Now I just need a reason to drink it. Or not
