For fire roasted tomatoes, I use normal tinned tomatoes with a splash of liquid smoke.
For liquid smoke if I don't have any I have used smoked paprika and smoked salt.

Depending on the recipe, I sometimes use chipotle tabasco or hickory sauce instead of liquid smoke, e.g. if I don't want the paprika flavour or want a stronger smoke flavour than I can get with acceptable quantities of smoked salt. I used to use chipotle paste but my Waitrose stopped selling it. I've also put hickory chips on a piece of foil in the bottom of a pot, put my ingredients in a metal steaming basket and added another layer of foil underneath the lid to trap the smoke inside the pot.

What would an accessible substitution of black salt be - I want to try the omelettes from VB.

I have nothing to add to this thread at the moment, but I just wanted to say what a good idea for a thread!

Just in case someone new comes in - you can substitute digestive biscuits or Hobnobs for graham crackers in graham cracker crust. It's not exactly the same, but it does in a pinch.
Also, if anyone needs the liquid smoke hook-up, I have ready access (hickory and mesquite).

you can order liquid smoke on amazon too. It's about £3.50 a bottle I think.

I wanted fire roasted toms for the Chickpeas Romesco from Veganomicon yesterday but I just left more charred bits on my red peppers before I blended them. It worked well. I'm just ate the hugest bowl ever, actually. And I'm going back for seconds, for reals.
Rachell has already (helpfully) mentioned this a million bajillion times but don't forget that treacle and molasses are the same thing, eh?

Isn't molasses runnier than black treacle? I'm pretty sure it's actually not the same thing, treacle is a mixture of syrup and molasses! But it makes a good sub.

made the jicama-watercress-avocado salad from vcon before and as it is sort of thai inspired I used green mango for the jicama. Its probably not a substitute that would work well in other things though, I've never actually tried a jicama, but it sounds like a turnip or something would be closer for general purposes?

Just FYI, I've seen corn syrup in Tesco and molasses is all over Holland and Barratt.

Last night I had a dream that MessyVeggie, Mr MessyVeggie, Jojo, Mr Jojo and I were on a trip somewhere (at the end of the dream it turned out to be Shepherds Bush, but at this point in the dream it felt pretty exotic) and I found a place selling MASSIVE bags of vital wheat gluten. And we all got SO excited.
So. Vegan.

So. Vegan. I can't find vital wheat gluten ANYWHERE. It has completely messed up my Christmas meal plans and now I don't know what to make.

I prefer Low Carb Megastore (when they have it in stock). It tends to be cheaper (£2.80 for 1kg vs. £1.95 for 500g, no minimum purchase, and I think cheaper shipping), and I've never noticed a difference in quality.
