Just a heads up to everyone, with an almost freaky simultaneity Costa and Nandos have started adding milk to their bicuits and bread rolls respectively. Pretty sad about costa, the gingery goodness of their biscuits has got me through many a tough day at work/uni. Emailed them (in hope of free stuff) and this was their reply;

I can confirm that there is now milk powder in the biscuit recipes you mention, which has lead to complaints from those who suffer from a milk intolerance, and I can confirm that your comments have been passed to our Food and Marketing teams.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for the disappointment, and we hope to welcome you to Costa in the very near future.

Who knows if they'll revert back to the old recipe - I can't even really figure out why they'd change it - better taste/cheaper/longer shelf life!?

As much as I try and avoid Nandos on principle it's just frustrating that you're now forced to pay more for a pitta/wrap if you don't/can't consume milk. They claim it 'makes them softer'.....emailled them too but no reply as of yet!

That SUCKS. Thanks for the alerts. I live about 5 steps from a Nando's now, and I've never been, and yesterday I was thinking 'well that's good to have right here in a pinch.' Nopers!

I buy coffee from Costa almost daily - I never knew they had vegan suitable biscuits in the first place!

Me too! I didn't know any of the big chains had anything vegan at all, aside from maybe the dark chocolate bars and chocolate covered coffee beans at Cafe Nero.
That sucks that they would randomly do that though. A friend of a friend who is a celiac is making it her life's mission to sue Costa after she ate their supposedly "gluten-free" bar and ended up with a hugely distended stomach and in pain for hours :(

Adding protein to bread dough does make it more tender, but you can accomplish the same thing by adding other proteins such as soy. I don't know if those things differ in terms of how commonly people are allergic to them though. I'm allergic to milk protein, so I can't get away with guessing.

Urgh, how disappointing. I love those Costa ginger biscuits, they always made up for the fact I couldn't enjoy a cake or pastry with my drink :(
