I've noticed a few people here are from/in the West Country... does anyone want to have a get-together?

what should we do? and where? i'd offer my comfy new place for a tea party or something, but it's still a bit of a mess and i'm a lazy sod. and i don't even own a teapot. this must change immediately.

But where? I live in North Wiltshire, so Bath is the obvious/lazy place for me. Bradford-on-Avon is nice but is not really a Winter place. Castle Combe is almost distressingly beautiful, but, again, it's cold. Any suggestions?

Are non-West Country Peeps allowed to crash this?

I live in Bath! But have limited internet so can't check here very often.

Bath is fine by me! it's only like 20 minutes by train from Bristol, and there's a decent number of things to do there.

Early July, anyone? I'm only partly joking.

Early July can certainly be arranged, I imagine. How about late February for a preliminary "eyeing each other sketchily then taking about nutritional yeast and muffins" thing?

May tiny nervous young west country vegans be allowed to this? I have no friends! D: And eating out is so dull, when you're the only tofu nut. And I live in Bath. I'm more than happy to go elsewhere though. Surely Bristol would be a good vegan place to go?

I have no friends either, due to being newish to the area and a hermit.

Ah a fellow hermit! This must be why vegans are so hard to come by around here. We're all hermits.

The only vegetarian friendly place I can think of in Bath is Demuths. I don't know if they're vegan friendly as well. I get dragged to chain restuarants a lot, but then it usually involves ordering vegetarian options and being very VERY specific about the no cheese.

I walked past a place I think was called the ARC cafe, near St Nicholas Market in Bristol, which I believe may be vegan. It looks pretty interesting, but my non-vegan friend made me walk past pretty quick.

Bath would be the lazy option for me too :). The centre of it's only ten minutes away.

it may be the only strictly vegetarian restaurant, but i'm sure it's not the only veg*n-friendly place in Bath. i had lunch at a little* Thai/pan-Asian restaurant along one of the bridges (i forget what it was called), and i'm pretty sure they made it vegan for me.


* it looked quite small at the front, but there was a surprisingly large amount of seating towards the back & downstairs.

There's a vegetarian pub called The Porter up at the top of the high street and left a bit. They did have vegan things last time I was there, but it's all somewhat unexciting pub food and a love-it-or-hate-it hipsterific atmosphere.

Demuths is very vegan-friendly, but it's more a Special Occasion place (not that you aren't special, but it's on the more expensive side of affordable).

Oh! There's a vegan-friendly burger place called... something near... somewhere. crepe! I don't think I know any street names in Bath. It's sort of between the centre and that pub my book group goes to if you take a very roundabout route. I am the king of giving directions!

Mission Burrito in Bath does a good vegan burrito.

Just goes to show how much I know about my own city :). The thai place along Pultney Bridge? I think it's called Thai on the Weir, if that is the one you're talking about, and it's had very good reviews from the vegetarians I know, so it may be worth a shot.

The Porter's ok, i've only ever been in there at night for drinks - I didn't know they did veggie food.

I think Moles club used to be vegan/vegetarian, but I don't know if they still do food, it might just be a club now.

Yeah Demuth's does look a little too expensive, I heard they do a vegan banoffee pie; you're right it's probably a special occasion thing.

I don't know any vegan burger places, but which pub is it? I only know streets by what shops/pubs are on it.

I'm going to have to try a burrito now, i've walked past it so many times and never thought to go inside.

Is Schwartz Bros. the burger place? Across the road from Las Iguanas and the theatre? The Market, which is right next door, portobello versions of their burgers. There was vegan soup in the Salamander when I wound up stuck eating there once. I've never eaten in the Porter. They forgot to serve me and closed the kitchen before I went back to check the one time I tried.

I've heard good things about Yak Yeti Yak, but never tried the Eastern Eye, i'll have to try it out soon.

I didn't know if Schwartz Bros was vegan friendly, if that is the one, there's another branch up near the Bell Pub on Walcot.

It's a shame the Podium's closed all the shops, the Lebanese 'Arabesque' restaurant used to be really good, and you could get as much as you wanted for £6. I'll keep an eye out to see if they ever find somewhere else to go.

I've only ever had chips there. They do have a lot of veggie burgers on the menu, but I never bothered to ask about them.

The Eastern Eye isn't the cheapest place, but they have allergy labelling that makes it easy to avoid milk.

DO NOT EAT AT MISSION BURRITO IF YOU VALUE YOUR VEGANISM/MORALS. I have been in their kitchens.

Schwartz has two branches in Bath and their burgers are vegan, they have ingredients available on request.

Arabesque closed down before the rest of the podium and was pretty much always empty so I think it doesn't bode well.

Yak Yeti Yak is great, the PPK have had meetups there before.

The Porter is under new management and fairly poor. The Bell is veggie and does vegan pizzas.

Whole Bagel is great for lunches, two vegan options on the menu now.

Moles is not veggie but was at some point as it is part of The Porter.

Thai By The Weir is okay but pretty greasy, Yum Yum Thai down by Boston Tea Party (who do vegan salads, sandwiches and burgers) is a lot better and has a whole veggieable menu.

Are you saying that they're careless about cross contamination? Or that their kitchens are dirty? Or that they outright lie about things being suitable for vegans? I've only been to the one in Reading but the staff there seemed very clued up about veganism & they do sponsor Bristol Veg Fest.

I've only ever walked past Mission Burrito, but there never seem to be anyone in there. I usually avoid fast food so neither that nor Schwarz would be my place of choice most of the time.

I always though Arabesque was fairly popular, since I usually went at lunchtimes and the place was normally quite full up. Maybe I just went in purely by accident on a very good day each time.

I think often thai places are occasionally quite good. Although, I tried the panasian place opposite Moles and there were a few options that could be easily veganfied (and the waiting staff were incredibly helpful and accomodating), but the menu was fairly boring for the insanely high price they charged, and the teeny weeny boxes of rice.
