i already have a US license which expires next month (although i need to get a UK license anyway). i only know how to drive automatic, but i'd like to be able to drive manual so that i'm not as limited in my options here. what driving schools can you recommend that can teach an experienced automatic-only driver how to drive stick?

Any good instructor should be able to teach you and you're already quite far ahead anyway if you can drive an automatic.
It was 16 years ago but I learnt with the AA. My instructor was brilliant and I passed first time, I was very lucky.

I would look on Yelp, etc. for reviews.
I passed too first time, after some helpful instruction, but the company is Oxford-based.
