So I have a kenwood chef with the blender jug bit, and I believed it when it said it could be used to crush ice.
LIES!

I've been making green monsters in it and the motor started making a less-than-good noise yesterday. I've stuck it in a press until I can get it serviced, but it seems I'm now in the market for a stand alone blender. Anyone have recommendations for one that's available in this part of the world and doesn't require a mortgage? (I.E. a vitamix or blendtec)

Needs to be able to deal with frozen fruit or ice on a very regular basis without crapping out the motor on me.

A few months ago I bought a Villaware 1000w blender for about £50. I haven't tried ice cubes in it, but it can make flour out of oats, grind up linseeds and blend cashews smooth.

I bought this one last year, and it's been pretty good: http://www.kitchengadgets.org.uk/duroni ... er-review/ I guess we use it two or three times a week, and so far so good! Ice crushing is not a problem at all, and the jug is really solid, heavy glass, which I like.

Eta it seems to be on offer from Amazon too, so costs £50

We have a cheap and cheerful Philips from AmazonUK

I mostly use the food processor for buzzing up soups etc. but bought a blender for crushing ice to make frozen daiquiris ... works very well for that ... even small amounts ...

We've a kitchenaid blender, which happily crushes ice / frozen fruit. Far cheaper than a vitamix and a lot more beautiful too :)

Yeh we bought this one on sale a little while back and while it has an 'ice' setting, etc, it takes a long time for big chunks of ice (bit fibby really). I prefer to use frozen bananas/berries instead which it get through no problem:

I'm pondering a Kitchenaid - does it blend soaked cashews completely smooth do you know? This is the failing of my current blender.

I'd forgotten about the cashew bit....I've been so hung up on my frozen fruit (soo humid here).

I have the same Phillips blender as Jenny mentioned above. I got it on sale for £30 about a year ago and so far so good. I use it at least 2-3 times a week with various frozen fruits, greens, nuts, oats etc. I have made my own peanut butter in there too! I find that it needs liquid to crush the ice so that could be annoying for some people. But it's cheap and does the job for me :)
If I had more money I'd probably get a kitchenaid blender. So pretty!
