Is this company a goodie or a baddie? I'm confused they say it is sourced and had rspo approval. I do love this peanut butter and don't want to give it up if they are the good guys but getting conflicting messages. Does anyone know for sure? Obviously this conversation is in reference to the orangutans.

What company are you talking about? Can you provide a specific link or photo?

I know that Meridian Foods have recently gone completely pam oil free in their entire range, including peanut butter: http://www.meridianfoods.co.uk/index.asp?selection=FAQs

I think Keely Weely might be talking about Whole Earth PNB: http://www.wholeearthfoods.com/award-wi ... r-2-2-6-2/
Personally I'm undcided. I think they are a good company (compared to some such as Unilever & L'Oreal) using a bad product.

For the time being I'm sticking with Meridian products which are just nuts: http://www.meridianfoods.co.uk/index.as ... rs&pid=431, although its worth pointing out that Sunpat products use peanut oil not palm: http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/ ... =259433808

They say its sub stained source. And web site refers to protecting the orangutans but I find it hard to trust

My personal view is that all palm oil in commercial use today is problematic to a degree because of deforestation to build palm oil plantations, therefore I try to avoid it if I can, so when there's a perfectly good palm oil-free peanut butter on the market such as that made by Meridian, I'll buy that instead.

I decided the same thing as Imogen and I now buy the Meridian one or the Sunpat one. TBH, I do think the Whole Earth one is the nicest, but I don't trust the "sustainable" label.

i personally prefer "natural" peanut butter (i.e. just ground peanuts and salt) to the no-stir kind. stirring up a full jar is kind of a pain, but i like the texture and taste better. Suma is my favorite - super smooth and yummy. Essential is also pretty good.

i tried Meridian's peanut butter years ago and didn't like it - way too coarsely ground for my taste. have they changed it at all since then?

All Meridian's peanut butter is 100% peanuts (except for a few that have a bit of salt added). They have both a crunchy and a smooth version, but I really like crunchy peanut butter myself so I'm probably not a good person to ask!

i don't know if it's done differently in the US, but the crunchy peanut butter i grew up with was a smooth peanut butter base with ample crunchy peanut chunks dispersed throughout. the "crunchy" Meridian peanut butter i had was more like a paste consisting of ground peanut pieces roughly the size of coarse sand grains.

Crunchy peanut butter is generally the same in the UK (smooth PNB with nuts added) but the Meridian is the exception. Just lots of nuts

It's in all the independent health food shops near me, and I believe Holland & Barrett stock it too.

Sometimes the supermarket will have it as well, but H&B sell it in massive tubs as well - if you really really like it: http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/ ... 88&bid=541

I avoid anything with palm oil in just to be sure. Meridian is the bomb, but when I'm skint I get tesco value crunchy peanut butter as it's palm oil-free and something stupid like 70p a jar.

Oh, I may have to try the Tesco one, I never noticed it before! Does it taste OK?

It's only 62p apparently! http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/ ... =250792306

It might be worth checking with Tesco what vegatable oil they use as palm oil can be referred to as vegetable oil

I phoned them today to ask what kind of vegetable oil it was and they weren't sure so they're going to get back to me early next week.

Of course :) I'll be gutted if it's palm, that's really sneaky calling it vegetable oil.

It's really common for palm oil to be labelled as vegetable oil, especially as now there's a lot more awareness around the issues of producing palm oil than there was a few years ago.

I buy the Meridian stuff in kilo tubs - no sugar or salt, but you'd never know it. Yum. Their almond butter is not allowed in the house though as I'd eat the whole damn jar in one sitting....with a spoon. Mmf.
