Hello there fellow United Kingdom dwellers! I have always felt rather jealous of the wonderful PPK gatherings had by our friends in the USA. What would people think of a similar gathering experience in the UK? It wouldn't have to be camping, but we could gather together in Summer in one of the loveliest bits of the UK and have amazing fun times- toast some marshmallows, cook together, go to the beach, do crafts, go walking, stay up late singing around a fire, find a city location to visit- like Guide camp but with no bedtime/creepy uniforms (unless that's how you roll...).

Anyone interested?

YEEEESSSS! Mike and I are going to Brighton at the end of June/beginning of July (for definite this time), if that works for people. But I have loads of holiday time and might be up for a short trip somewhere closer at another time if that doesn't work for everyone else, though I might have to crash with someone.

Why the shell not? I'll be done at uni in June (terrifying thought), and if i have money I shall come.

Also, I'm a Brownie leader - so I have plenty of songs to share.

What an awesome idea! There's a vegan group who does a big two week camping extravaganza every year and I've considered going, but I think a PPKamping (or whatevering) trip would be way better!

Yes! I am totally up for this especially if it involves toasting marshmallows, I love camping too. Where were you thinking location wise hana?

We are probably going to Ireland this summer, so maybe I can come! I can't go across the pond without visiting my English relatives, and my grandma lives in Lewes (just outside of Brighton), so that could work. I'll be watching this thread. I also have family in London, Manchester, and York.

Personally, I like the "not camping" part of the plan. I hate camping. But I like toasting marshmallows. Surely we can find a balance.

But camping's the best! You can get away with not washing, brilliant!

It's not the not washing that I have a problem with, though I'm not keen on being dirty. It's more the not sleeping in beds and sleeping outside that I have a problem with. And the non-cute/-furry wildlife. And the outdoor peeing/pooing. I like the fire part of camping, though. (To be fair, I haven't camped since I was in the single digit age bracket, but I doubt it's gotten much better.)

You could always have the meet up in the car park of a Travelodge...

Do you think they'd let us have a fire?

I can assure you that I've never been to a campsite in the UK where you've had to pee / poop outside - if that was the case I wouldn't be into camping either!

Lake District!

Camping is okay, but I don't think it's everyone's cuppa (plus it means buying and carrying a bunch of stuff if you don't already have camping gear). Maybe somewhere with other options too?

I know it's out of the way for lots of you and that I am very biased but the South West is pretty damn awesome for this kind of thing, you've got beaches, woods, beautiful countryside and a couple of decent sized reasonably vegan friendly cities in close proximity (Exeter and Bristol). I'd be happy to host a couple of people as I have to admit that I am far too uptight to actually sleep outside!!! There's a load of those schmancy camping yurty village things down here. Also we could look into some kind of holiday house with a garden for camping if people are really anti-camping: PPK House! However, I am open to travelling, I haven't seen any of the UK north of Aberystwyth (for reals!) and feel that should probably change!

To be honest, somewhere fairly central might be better as it's fairer for travel for everyone then- the Lake District is going to be a gnarly journey for people coming from the South West, but likewise I understand that getting down here is going to be arduous and expensive for Scots folk for example.

The only thing that I would request is that it happens in either May half term or during the Summer holidays (last week of July and all of August) as my time off isn't flexible at all- would that be alright?

As long as it's not too expensive to travel, I'm up for anything at any time. I can take time off whenever I want, so I'm pretty flexible. But the cheaper the better in all aspects!

Maybe you should look into youth hostels? They often have reasonable prices and a kitchen you can use in case there is no vegan restaurant in the area.

this could work, but as it seems that everyone likes the outside aspect but not everyone is keen on the actual camping, perhaps we should look for a holiday house to rent for a few days? if it had a garden or was close enough to somewhere we could do the fun camping bits like building a fire (beach/nature park with fire pit), we'd be (mushroom) gravy!

Sounds awesome! I'm not a huge fan of camping either so if there's other options, that'd be good, but I would camp if I had to.

I'm from Lewes and now living in the West Country, so anywhere with South in the region name is, well, convenient. Brighton is a good vegan mecca.

This sounds like so much fun! I don't think I am a big fan of camping, I have never done it before though! It looks like I am going to be on the mainland quite a lot this year so I could totally arrange one of the trips around something like this

This sounds amazingly fun. I'm in. But I'm also a whiny camper. Holiday cottage sounds good, with outside fun things (fires, beaches, stuff!) but with, y'know, a bath.
