ha! That's how Americans seem to me, and I'm American! I ride the bus that goes from the airport into Manhattan every day, so I see these people a lot.

This totally happened to me on the T with some tourists from Ohio. (I'm a midwesterner by birth, so it doesn't bother me much, but still!)

i'd think it's more typical of small-town America. it's probably part of why people from those parts think city folk are rude.

I've had that happen to me! It can be kind of funny.

It's weird to me that Europeans would see Americans as too friendly. I assumed that Europeans would be more likely to buy into the "Ugly American" stereotypes of bumbling tourists who expect all countries to be like the U.S. and loudly complain when that isn't the case.

I've met some Americans that behave like that in other countries, mostly people that have never traveled before.

based on what i've heard, this is a view a lot of Europeans have of British tourists.

in my experience, a surprising number of Britons really like the US & Americans. i was honestly taken aback, especially when i was there for several months toward the end of the Bush Jr administration.

I think it's just old folks. I met a few British pensioners just like that.

YEah I have met a few British pensioners like that too. And the odd person who wants to talk to everyone on the tube.

I guess some of the mannerisms--like saying 'how are you' a lot, introducing yourself by name unnecessarily--seem very American to me, though.

(I am American)

I know! I lived in Central England and that never seemed to happen, but when I visited York every shop I went into everyone was asking me if I was all right. I felt so insecure. Being Canadian on top of that = too much apologizing to deal with.

I've lived here for ten years and my accent is a bit mid-atlantic now, but whenever I want help or information the thickest American accent comes out and I'm always more likely to get what I want.

Are you all right? in English English = how are you? in American English
Are you all right? in American English = what's wrong? in English English
What's up? in American English = how are you? in English English
What's up? in English English = what's wrong? in American English

It's complicated! I also learned not to tell an English person they looked like a muppet (cute) in a hat because a muppet looks stupid in English English. And you really don't want to use the word fannypack in the UK.

My (American) sister-in-law to this day doesn't quite understand why people stared when she loudly threatened to kumquat someone's fanny if they didn't behave.
