I went to Green Lotus in Hyannis the other day and got a reuben- it was good! They have homemade, really thinly sliced seitan, and that made it. To veganize it they use Daiya mozz, which is fine. But I just noticed my card was charged almost $11, and I could've sworn it was $8. That's one hell of an expensive sandwich.

The real reason I went though was for the chowder, and they were out! As a lifelong New Englander and former chowder lover (minus the actual clams- ew), I was pretty bummed. Still, if I'm in town, I'll definitely go back. The novelty of vegan food even semi-close to me is hard to get over.

We didn't get to do anything fun when we were there. Literally drove (rode) past some of these suggestions...

But you survived the trip without major fighting, yes?

Actually, major fighting did happen! But that's a long story....let's just say we cut our trip short. And it had nothing to do with me!

Oh geez, that sucks. Sorry I brought it up! Sounds like your in-laws are... uh... easy to fight with? Hard to please? There must be a tactful way to call a stranger's in-laws testy and self-centered....

I finally went to Karoo Restaurant in North Eastham with my mom this past weekend, and we both enjoyed it. (My mom is so not adventurous when it comes to trying new foods, so the fact that she liked her meal is huge. When we got back home, she even named a shelter cat "Karoo"!) The menu at the restaurant has all of the vegan dishes printed in green, which makes things so much easier, and there were several vegan options. Plus it's fun to order the "vegan bunny"!

Also, I noticed that Van Rensselaers in Wellfleet has some vegan/vegetarian selections (http://vanrensselaers.com/dinner10.php#vegetarian). I know my extended family members like to go there, so it might be another good option for mixed vegan/omni company.

We drove down to Edward Gorey's house in Yarmouth (something we've meant to do for ages) yesterday, and stopped at the Green Lotus in Hyannis for lunch. It's a pretty casual, no-frills, coffee shop sort of place, but everything we ordered was good; definitely an option to bear in mind if you're down that way!

It was! We are huge Gorey fans, and have wanted to visit for years but just never got around to it before now. The museum is in his home, which is filled with original drawings, photos of him with his six cats, his weird collections of random stuff...the Gashlycrumb Tinies scavenger hunt was just the icing on the cupcake!

The gift shop is also well worth a visit. I was sorely tempted by the skeleton weathervane.

But $650 was a bit out of our price range, so we bought this fabulous print instead.

I know! Next time we've got an extra $650 burning a hole in our pocket, right?!

I was thinking the only thing that would hold me back would be the price!

FYI for any future Cape Cod travellers... we stayed here for our honeymoon and at the time there were breakfast vegan options... though I don't see anything on the website about it currently... you should call first to see if they are still vegan friendly. It was lovely and the innkeepers were very nice.

Green Lotus in Hyannis for sure. There's also Basil Thai Cuisine on Rt 28 in W. Yarm (the usual drill - ask for no fish sauce), and Ying's for sushi and thai in Center St., Hyannis. There's a tiny thai place on Main St. Hyannis that has some great veg options. Chipotle in Cape Cod Mall, and Panera in the Kmart Plaza. Thuan Loi Vietnamese restaurant in S. Yarmouth.

If you're up for travelling a few miles, the Box Office Cafe on Rt 28 in S. Chatham is great - I think it's the only place for pizza with Daiya on the Cape - and The Corner Store for really good burritos, also in S. Chatham on Rt 28.
