Every year I go up to Madison for the Great Taste of the Midwest beer festival in August.

This is the first time I'll be going with ANOTHER VEGAN, so I won't be sitting alone, being the odd lady out everywhere. Any good vegan places I can't miss?

i tend to keep coming back to madison in my travels, so i`d love to know.
(whenever i go we eat a lot of asian food and cook at home. one time i went we did have a really fancy dinner at a place near the state house and my hosts called ahead and they made me a fantastic mushroom ravioli-- which they served to me happily, pleased to have been of service, etc-- but it was served in butter. le sigh.)

The boss always takes us out for dinner after the fest, but it's usually a steak place. I love the cocktails at the Tornado Room, but I think I had to just get a salad and a veggie side last time (which turned out to have butter all over it).

Ooh. I did find a food cart that will be at the farmers market they have around the capitol on Saturdays: http://ladoniacafe.com/
That will be helpful.

green owl! it's all vegetarian and mostly vegan, plus good dessert options.

http://www.thegreenowlcafe.com

also, if you go to the chocolate shoppe (an ice cream place on state street, a few blocks from the capitol), they have vegan ice cream options there.

oh! and ian's pizza is like a half-block from the capitol, and they usually have vegan options. there might be a certain day that is "vegan day" (i.e., they have vegan slices in the window), but if it's like our ian's in milwaukee, you can order a full-size vegan pizza anytime.

Oh, awesome! Thanks. Someone told me about the Green Owl last year, but I was with my friend who was staunchly against going anywhere that did not cater to her meaty bloodlust (A fight ensued).

We'll be staying near the capitol, so hopefully Ian's is into hotel room delivery... Thanks!

I did get Ian's pizza delivered to my hotel room last year -- it didn't come until like 11pm, but I remember I got it with vegan ranch and it was delightful. I'm getting it again this year for sure.

I'm going with the meaty bloodlust friend this year, with the requisite stop at Mars Cheese Castle and all, but I'll be okay. Will bring cliff bars and other snacks.

I will be heading up there in October, and you bet I am keeping track of all your suggestions. (vegan ice cream, oh yesssss)

I had the best airport experience there years ago- I was flying out of there and had a long wait. I went to the kiosk and ordered a coffee and said "you know, I feel sheepish asking since it is the dairy state and all, but would you happen to have soymilk for the coffee?". The woman smiled and said "we grow soy here too, dontcha know" and lo and behold there was soymilk. This had to be almost 10 years ago when it was hard to find that option.

Bandung on Willy St is by far my fave and has lots of vegan optiona
Monty's Blue Plate Diner has lots of vegan options, though not specifically vegan - great brunch
Tex Tubbs has Teese nacho cheeze for their nachos and lots of vegan options, also not specifically vegan

I like Green Owl well enough - it'a nice to go to a specifically veg place (and I don't want to seem ungrateful), but sometimes I find their stuff too plain.

I'm basically just gonna be downtown on the square without a car, but maybe I can figure something out...

Bandung would be within walking-ish distance. Green Owl, Monty's, and Tex Tubbs are all in the same area and less walking friendly.

If you go to the Madison Vegan website and click on "Downtown," everything that pops up will be within walking distance for you.

I did! That site is super helpful. Thank you!

We tried to go to one of those food carts at the Farmers Market last year (I think it said it had vegan tamales?), but it never opened. Hopefully it will this year, because who doesn't want tamales?
