I'll be there next month to visit the fam - my mom and sis&co moved there a few months ago. I have a pretty good idea of what to eat but are there any secrets that Happy Cow has not revealed?

It looks like Happy Cow has it covered. Pattycake is a must..Saturdays they have really good cinnamon rolls (though my husband makes the ones from Vegan Brunch and says those are better.)
Hal & Al's has become our weekly hangout place due to the large beer selection (though not all are vegan) and vegan corndogs.
I agree with rocklobster- Dirty Franks is good and has awesome tater tots!
Nothstar Cafe's burger is pretty amazing too!

I agree, Pattycakes is a MUST. I just registered on this board to tell you that! Their iced cutouts and molasses cookies are to die for =) So is everything they have!

Looks like I'm going to be in Columbus for two nights on the way to and from a conference in Kentucky. What would be the one or two must-see or must-eat places? I figure that, if I'm going to be somewhere new, even for just a few hours, I might as well explore rather than just eating at Chipotle or something.

For sure, stop by Pattycake Bakery...everything I have had there has been amazing! If you are there before 2 on a weekday, Rad Dog might be out front and they are pretty tasty.
Dragonfly is good but not inexpensive. Northstar cafe has a really good vegan burger and a few locations around town.
If you are looking for some good bar food, Hal & Al's is good. Vegan fried pickles!

I'm going to be stopping in Columbus twice, on the way to Lexington and on the way home, so I'll probably have time to go to a few places. Hal and Al's looks really good, and there will probably be at least one day that I'll be in Columbus at lunch time on a weekday, so I'll check out Rad Dog.

How safe is the neighborhood around Hal and Al's? I'm going to be alone, and I'm not sure I want to try to navigate a not-great area in an unfamiliar city at night.

We have gone in the day and at night and have never had an issue in that neighborhood although many people tell me its a bad area. Of course I've lived mostly in Detroit and Los Angeles so even the worst areas in Columbus don't phase me much. Its on a main road and easy to find. We've always been able to park out front with no trouble.

Thanks. I ended up being too tired that night to go out to dinner anywhere.

I had the famous Northstar veggie burger over the weekend and it really is worth the hype!

I just wanted to bring up the thought of a Columbus PPK meetup again. I belong to the Columbus Vegan Meetup group but a PPK meet would be fun. We had a PPK meetup when I lived in NYC and people came from all over the country. It was awesome. I'll be glad to organize it for the spring here in Columbus. I'll try to work out the timing with Isa so that she can attend, too.

I would love a PPK meetup in Columbus. I attended my first vegan meet up last Saturday at Hal & Al's. I live in a small rural town north of Columbus and don't know of any other vegans around this area.

Ooh PPK Meetup is a great idea! And obviously, an older one. :)
